I've got these spare, which I am never going to use- they are some variety of crank bros pedal:
Includes cleats. Anyone know what model they are?

No its not, cat 6 is the joke because it refers to commuter racing.

Cat 7 is internet forum arguing about categories of racing.

At Aches n Pains - Lots here love time atac, and speedplay for the rich weightweenies.
I use spd. I've had no issues. they're the mtb one. There's also spd-r which is a roadie pattern (three bolts for cleats not two) which have more balletslipper like shoes, which are really hard to walk in.
I stopped by my lbs earlier, they recommended some egg beaters, ill check out those time atac ones out as well, thanks
Dammit- ill pm you about the pedals.

Is it possible for someone to whip up "pengy" in the zipp or enve font, or even the lightweight font. My vote would be for that.

They would, given the price. Shimano PD-M520 will be fine, somebody usually has them for under £20 delivered, e.g. http://www.pedalon.co.uk/acatalog/shimano-m520-pedals.html and if you don't like them after the first week you can probably sell them pretty quickly for £15

basic Crank Brothers can be had for under £30

Don't they have have a reputation of deciding the dont want to stay on the axels and breaking free?

Aches and Pains- you are welcome to them, just come and pick them up/meet in the City.
I'm never going to use them, and would rather someone else did.

I thought that was Candys more than Egg Beaters

thats what i was thinking of, yes

I think you can clip in the egg beaters on all 4 sides, if you can that should be easier for a first timer i would of thought.

small platform for your foot though

Spurious "benefit". If you tread on any double sided SPD pedal, it rolls over to expose a clippable face. Do you spend much time pedalling on the backplate of your current pedal? Thought not.
I like Crank bros pedals.
The target feels bigger to clip-in, and you can clip-in in almost any direction. For fixed I'd get a platform based crank bros pedal (candy), as they seem to hold on better.
