  • Omniums. Or for RD2 money, the SRAM S300 1.1. Will be much stiffer than the RD2s and I think they'd look great on that frame too.

    £80 with BB - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=31621

  • I would go for an outboard bearing chainset,

SRAM is a good choice. I think On-One do an external bearing track chain-set too. Or you could modify a road one too (if you are on a budget).

Cheers for that. I'm glad you said that about going outboard. I really like the external BB and cranks on my Pinarello road bike and can imagine it would make a big difference on the track.

Omniums it is I think. In black obviously. Cheers all.

EDIT: Saw the S300 and considered them as a good compromise too.

  • 130bcd? >>>

  • In favour of 130BCD is the fact that is all I have ever used so have loads of chainrings in 130.

I'm not aversed to switching though.

Pistoffski is correct. Omniums are £150 at Condor at the moment...good price. I'll go and take a look at some tomorrow.

  • Arent these a rebranded version of the omniums? only 100 squids

  • I having little problem with mine omnium, driveside bearing cap gets loose.

  • The Omnium is a definitely a better choice than the S300, as 6pt highlighted the 144 BCD that the Omnium offers gives a wider choice of quality track chain rings.

    All clear now, cheers.

    They certainly look like them.

True - the S300 chainring is 3/32" as well. But then it's nearly half the price of the Omnium, and better than the (also 130 BCD) RD2.

  • my special products 853 Raleigh cross bike with dura-ace 7800 and cheap wheels not quite finished yet seat post needs replacing and quill stem instead of converter.

How much did you get that for if you don't mind me asking? Was watching it on the bay, so presume you made an arrangement with the seller?

  • I'm sold on the omniums now. Hopefully I'll find some in black but I'll go with silver unless it looks truly horrendous. I'm not that fussed with looks.

  • you can always get the silver ones powder coated black like reen did

  • Seriously, thanks everybody. You've been very helpful.

There were problems with these IIRC. Deffo do some UTFS on here before buying them. I can't get anymore acronyms in AFAIK.

  • Will I notice the difference

Yes. Will it make you faster? No, apart from some possibility that the stiffer feeling will make you try harder.

  • the stiffer feeling, nearly always makes me harder.

  • Re: Omniums- you can get SRAM apex for about £40 and then get a range of chainrings that fit from the variety of companies who supply the correct BCDs, and then you've got a solid set of track cranks for a lot less money.
(they come in 165 in black also).

    stiffness- I don't know- but I'm unconvinced it'd be a massive difference.
And the Q factor is the same as (or 1mm less than) the omniums...

Lots of work to do still, but hopefully this will be my about town bike for next summer.

  • with pic...

  • am I just being slow or has this been completely ignored? should be real nice

  • could, i guess

  • Going from these:

To these, when my new cables turn up:

As I have been hankering after a much larger "drop" section of the bars.

(If anyone would like a pair of 44cm Ritchey WCS bars let me know- under 200g if that matters to you)

  • nice, pretty dramatic change! what are they?

  • On the bike at the moment:

    Going on:

As you can see both bars are Ritchey WCS, the new ones are the "Classic", the old ones (on the bike now) are the Logic 2 I believe.

  • That Masi is beyond nice.. Effin' wow.. 753.. Purple to boot.. MAN! What are you planning on putting on it scorch?

I got my black Omniums from Condor for £150.

Mr Condor Sales Assistant Man suggested they were fairly normal, hardly hens teeth or anything. With that in mind, it would be worth checking with Condor before you drop 180 GN and get them powder coated.
