I never ask questions I'm kicking ass and making statements
The illest muthafucker you ever came face to face with
Or any other time and or space or outer limit places
Or Bosonic twenty six inch radial spoked vibrations
My rims aren't made for glistening, my pads are too abrasive
My bike can exceed light speed rewind time and erase entire races
I'm blazing skids and blowing tubes, smoke signals up to spaceships
Receive extraterrestrial messages through internet communication
They speak in beats, snare and drums, I translate it tongue-in-cheek
and trance-like tongues, I've reached a peak that no one's done,
easily I am the only one, Must mean that I'm the Scoble, son.miro_o, you bin scobled.

While I'm here. Most recent build Pinarello Paris Pista
why is this called paris? and what is that thing hanging off of saddle?
-
• #51661
the inbred is temporarily done, gonna get it running 9 speed next month, and going to change saddle, bars and stem as they are all just temps to get rolling. took it down to epping forest on saturday, just about manageable with 32 - 16 although i definitely would have preferred an 18t at the back -

The Paris was Pinarello's high end aluminium frame from circa 1998. The idea for the name probably came from the then dominance Pinarello had in the Tour de France, having riders on their bikes winning the race in 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997.

'Paris' is the frame type. And it's a champagne cork on the saddle.

It's hardly the Rockies. :] -

^^Them wheels are my dream wheelset (albeit 3 cross front).. Full DA too right? Very nice!

It's hardly the Rockies. :]Personal preference surely, I used to ride 42 x 18 on the road and likewise 32 x 18 off road. I just don't understand how people choose to pull such large gears.

Obviously personal preference...but 32 x 18 with 26" wheels is VERY low...especially for an area like Epping forest.
Just my opinion though. -

42 18 ? ? ? i would find that unbearable... i ride 52 17 or 52 16
48 16 on my langster but i get bored with all the spinning -
• #51671
Spinning = good
Knee popping = badI'd much rather have an overly spinny gear than something that made my Oscars hate me, and give me a john wayne gait.

This^
52 x 16 is more than I ride on the track!

I agree that spinning is good, but also, road riding is very different to off road anyway, so comparing the two doesn't count for much.
I've always found that too low a gear off road can often make things harder. It can cause you to 'bounce' around a little more due to trying to keep up with an overly spinny gear, both on flats and on standing climbs.
Also where there is a sudden need for acceleration straight after a downhill section...If the gear is too spinny you have to first catch up with the gear before you get any real forward drive. But as has been said...it's all personal preference. Still, it's interesting to see just how low some people choose to go.

When I used to race xc singlespeed, I was running 32:13 or 32:12. It sounds high, but it worked. I won races against people with gears regularly.

If you get bored spinning 48/16 you must be seriously quick. I find around 65" to be a good compromise between being able to ride properly on open roads and stop-starting in cities. 55" on the SSCX bike seems about right, though, if I could be bothered, I'd change it according to riding conditions.
Yep, something along those lines... ;)
