It's been a while since my last post in "Current Projects" but recently after many many months of picking up an abandoned ladies Raleigh Cameo from a friend (the bag was heavy that day)
I've decided to get my hands dirty and build it up as a present for my Mother. She kept on nagging me about how much space it takes up in her garage so I couldn't take it any longer. Here is what it looked like when I got it.
After a trip to the resprays at the back of my garden with two cans of "Ford Red" from Wilco it was starting to look promising.
AAAAANNNNd off to east cooast customs
After literally days at the local bicycle shop wirebrushing all the old parts, finding a used 3-speed wheel, completely disassembling the Sturmey Archer, oiling it, putting it back together, wiping grease in my eyes, 10 cups of coffee, [strike]stealing[/strike] paying for new parts like a NOS white saddle, the Raleigh Cameo was reborn :)
£177.65 spent on restoration. Still looking to find a matching used front wheel, a bell from the era that works, and repainting the word "cameo" on the downtube.
I admire your dedication there, if I was doing something similar I wouldve got some more modern wheels though. Cycle speedway rims are the same old size. Alloy rims would be much lighter and offer better wet weather braking.
If you fancy a very large n loud dome bell for it, give me a shout. It will suit the bike, but these bells are actually rikshaw bells so would be much bigger than what wouldve originally come on it.

Weighs a ton, and makes a right old racket when she rides it, but she seems happy. -

Anyone got a clue on where I could find a 4 or preferably 5 bolt chainring, 1/8 with 37T or 38T? It gives me the gear inches I'm looking for and 15 skid patches but I'm struggling to find one big time. Its for an MTB fixed conversion but MTB specific 1/8 Chainrings are rare and generally range bewteen 32 and 36T, and track rings start at about 42T. I've found a 40T one but that only gives me 3 skid patches with my 15T rear sprocket.
I'm swapping out these big steel 2pc cranks and replacing them with either road or XC cranks to save on the weight

I got my PX frame chased/faced at the weekend but have had to stop building due to lack of funds until payday.
I'm just wondering what peoples thoughts are on compact or standard chainsets? I'm thinking compact double, with 12-25/27 cassette. I'm having problems finding a compact double 105 5600 chainset in black for a reasonable price though. Best I can find with a 170mm crank arm length is 39-53T.
As this is my first real road build, I'm unsure what to go with to be honest.
Also, can anyone tell me if the more recent 5700 chainset is compatible with 5600 front mech, and 5600 shifters? I can't imagine it wouldn't be, but I've read that the new 105 groupset isn't interchangeable with the latest ultegra groupset etc.

Not track specific, but sure it'll be alright:

Its a ten speed though, so 3/32. There are plenty of single chainrings for MTBs, but mainly for those runnings a single ring upfront and a cassette on the back, like for 4X or Freeride/Downhill, there seem to be few single-speed specific rings in the wider width, and when they are they are often discs for use with 3pc cranks. Very frustrating: I may just have to swap around the rear sprocket and go for a bigger front ring

Hah, took a gamble on sizing.
Hoping I don't have a foot of seatpost out

I use a 3/32 ring with 1/8 chain and sprocket. It's fine. And ensures a ready supply of cheap chainrings.
FYI lots of SS mountain bikers used to use Sugino XD cranks, and there is a super cheap copy of this crank now that's good. Liiiiiiink >>>>>

Foot retention? The saddle is quite low so it cant be that small for you?

Ok, I would have liked to stick to a wider ring but I'll follow your advice. Complication is the bike has an external BB (Hope too) so I need Hollowtech/2pc cranks, trying to pick up a cheapy one on ebay as we speak

If you go for 36 or 38t you'll always have lots of chainrings available for mtb cranks. So many people are running them on 1x9/10 setups these days.
I think I bought a new Deore 36t ring for £9!

I really like the Middleburn SS ring, have one on another bike already, so if I'm going with the thinner option, I'll pick one of them. Will give Velosolo a call next week (they are on holiday) just to see if there if there isn't something they can get, if not I'll plump for Middleburn
