this is lovely. Proper stealth porn.

How did you get the stickers off the rims? I have a mind to do something similar...

  • A 1998 Peugeot Competition 7000 made from Columbus Brain OS. Was born with Veloce, but I'm going to put on an Ultegra 6500 group with some blue Open Pros to Ultegra hubs. I guess gumwalls would be period correct, but gumwalls on blue rims?

Stick with black or silver rims, coloured rims are very hard to make look nice. I'd go with silver parts (crank etc), black rims, saddle, bar tape and hoods, possibly pedals too. Matching that blue could be pretty hard with rims.

    Lovely looking frame btw

  • A quick mock-up:

Not a perfect match, but I think it'll do for now....

  • I like it.

  • I don't, but it's your bike.

  • I hate GIANT, but BMXED you bike is proper rpon.
    Congrats, it's brill.

  • LOVE that Giant...

  • It's lighter than my bike, he must be cheating.

  • Using the bike lowers its weight, as the parts wear out.

    Just a thought.

  • I just dremel the edges off the chainrings and sprockets, has the same effect and no need to ride the bike.

    Liar.

You haven't asked about the best dremel attachment to use.

  • I asked that on a plumbing forum I frequent, where I mainly ask cycling questions.

  • You and your gas pipe bike frames.

  • Here's my Jan Janssen that I got from Erikfox this afternoon. Stuck some bits I had lying around on it, some are staying, others are getting replaced.
Needs shifters for braze ons (anyone want to swap with some clamp on 600s?), 27.2 seat post (not sure if you can see the Kronenburg can shim), BB (bought), front mech is crappy shimano and is going. Looking to go fully 600 on it but may take some time.
    Frame was £125.

  • Shock news just in- I have been wearing out the rear tyre on the CX bike by (my God!) riding it a lot, so have put slicks on it in order to make it go faster and save the last of the CX tyre:

  • Building a commuter singlespeed for my brother. Budget ~£400.

Found this on eBay, won for £67. 653 frame & forks, Campag dropouts and Cinelli BB shell.

It's in pretty good nick. Going to do it with risers and build some sensible 36H wheels.

I want to use Nitto B259AA bars but they're 23.8 on the grip area (right?) and I can't find any decent simple flat-bar levers in that clamp size. Don't want the Paul E-Lever as I hate them, and they're expensive. Is there anything else? I'd use Tektro RLs but I don't think the cross lever design that pushes the outer rather than pulling the inner will work with the internal rear brake cable routing. Right? Or is my brain failing?

  • After one year and and little bit of cleaning, I finally get to ride the old Vitus on the Correzian roads again. Sorry for the bartape and hoods but this will have to do for the 9-day stay.

  • My current project - a 60s Claud Butler Olympic road/track frame. I stole my brothers 27" wheelset and shoved it on to see how it looked but the clearances are far too small for mudguards...I think it was made for 700c wheels and 'sensible' (25/28ish) sized tyres for the road with sprints for the track.

The crosstop lever will be fine. internal cable routing is no problem.

If you look carefully the logos are still on the rims, they're a ghosted graphic which seems to be under the clearcoat. If you've got carbon rims with stickers than can't be peeled I'm not sure how good an idea it is to take sandpaper/carbolift to them.

Oh man, that giant is shit hot

You'll be happy to know it should get a bit lighter soon. I've got some parts on the way from Smud Carbon, and trimming the steerer tube will take 20+ grams off.
I might look into getting some Powercordz or i-link cables, though my Gore Ride-On cables work perfect for the time being. I think it could do with some black chainrings for aesthetic purposes.

Stop while you're ahead, once you start scratching around for a few grams you often end up making the bike worse even though it's lighter. Red rings are heavy for a reason, light ones flex when you change up, and the Red front mech doesn't need any more bendiness in the system.

What are you using to adjust the headset? There's scope for cutting weight, improving aesthetics and maintaining practicality with something like this

I've realised that it's quite easy to end up spending more money than is really necessary and making the bike not quite as functional. I was running a 7900 front mech because it was fractionally lighter than the Red one, but it didn't shift as crisply. 20mm deep tubs were a consideration for a while, but I'm sure they would feel noodly in comparison and I'm hesitant to trust tubs for general riding.

With regards to the rings it would be a toss up between Stronglight CT-2s or Sram Red Black rings, both are a similar weight and have a good reputation.

I've got an Extralite Ultrastar 2 fork bunk which weighs 7g so I can't go any lighter there. I'll be pairing it with a Smud ahead cap (4.5g with alu bolt) when it arrives.

Whilst I agree that the logos on the Bontrager stem are far from beautiful it's certainly not a heavy stem, once I swapped the bolts to ti it was sitting just below 110g. The weight weenie alternatives seem to come with reduced stiffness or a 26mm clamp.

One day I'll get round to removing the logos from everything.

    ftfy.
11.5g vs. 9g for my custom one :-)
