In the end I took the top tube and bite on it as much as possible with my brittle teeth, It was mentally painful, but I rode it a lots more because I no longer worry about keeping it pristine.
I suggest you to do the same.
You chewed your bike in order to ride it more?
dude....

When I first got my Bob Jackson, it was pristine, and I looked after it, meaning I did not ride it enough.

you did that deliberately... like buying jeans with holes already in them.

There is nothing wrong with wanting a bike as an ornament. However, I think that bikes can fall into 2 categories:
1: The bike is a tool for a specific job, such as commuting, MTBing, cyclocrossing etc. You use the bike for this purpose regardless of what impact it has on the asthetics - ie. scratched paint.
2: A trophy bike, which you keep in very good condition, it could be any kind of bike - eg. retro track bike. This bike would be only ever ridden outside in the dry, cleaned and polished after every ride.Unfortunately all my bikes are 'tools' and I would really like a 'trophy' bike at some point. Unfortunately I have 5 bikes in a studio flat, so this will not happen any time soon...

Does anybody know which tyres and rims would have been on standard production top end Miyatas of 1980 /1981 bikes?

Might be a better angle. It's great to ride. Gear 1 for going up the little hills around where I live is perfect, 2 for the flat and 3 for downhills. Couldn't have asked for more.
Nice build there. A fastish commuter with carry space! Are you thinking of using it pretty much as is for touring then? Also your blog suggests you live near me. I'll keep an eye out for you.

that blue surlies quite nice. I think its the burly (sorry) looking rack that helps balance it out. My mate has a 30's raliegh gents racer which has since been updated with a standard 3spd hub and he says the same thing, 1 for climbing (though some climbs around here/ sustained 1:4s etc get a bit much). 2 for general pottering and 3 for downhill and 'getting some miles done' Suits its relaxed style down to the ground.

Not quite a current project, more of a slow evolution. I threaded my rear hub so put on a spare coaster wheel in the meantime, and it feels very summery, so I'm sticking with it for now. Although the little idiosincrocities (?sp) will probably get on my nerves eventually.
I switched the risers to ITM northroad bars with brook tape...and a bell. The position feels a lot nicer.
Also Im amazed at the difference in smoothness having a low section touring(ish) rim with lower spoke tension Vs. CXP33's. I obviously expected it, but sometimes it's supprising how differnent it makes the differnce to the overall feel of a bike.

Do you think the front mudguard could do with being a bit closer to the tyre?

couldnt get along with the north rounders, felt a bit odd. got a thomson stem and back to risers for now. also mudguards again because even in summer getting a wet booty is no fun.just noticed how pointy uppy and daft my saddle looks, but it's mad comfy so meh.

Thanks! I sold a single speed and a hybrid and built this as a commuter that'll also get me to the shops and back with stuff. The 3 speed Sturmey seems dead on in terms of gear inches. Very happy with it. Have a couple of road bikes as well, and this is a very different ride, and none the worse for it. I'd LOVE to do a tour someday. Maybe coast to coast or something, nothing TOO hilly though...

Ta. I'm thinking of removing the decals. Nothing wrong with Surly, but they're a bit 'down with the kids' for my liking. Or is that mean on Surly?

Thank you!
Skully pics of your Duell please I've been sat at the pc all day waiting.....
No, you just need a ratbike like everybody else. And a 29er. And a Brompton.
Carbon road bike with Sram Red is also welcome.
