  • Seriously though. Just get the Pompetamine

ftfy. Stock sizes are less than half the price of the Surly.

  • yeh that's what I was looking at. The surly does "look" a little tougher though. Also the blurb about disc specific racks bending the drop outs does worry me. And having a kid on the back does put a lot of stress on the rear rack.

tester you have a pompetamine yeh? what is the tyre clearance like? I'd like to put something a bit bigger than I have on at the moment (32's I think) and maybe go tubeless. The karate monkey will do this easy but the pomp looks a bit tight.

  • Well my langster has bitten the dust. Too much in appropriate use I think.
It was being used like this

and this happened. A bit tricky to tell what is ging on as it was in a cupboard and I could get it out to photo propperly. Basically the drive side chain stay has snapped near the drop out.

Is it possible to get this weld back together? I know with steel it's easy but with aluminium? Also what are the chances it's beginning to fail elsewhere?

If it's not looking great I'll get a new frame. I'm thinking a pompetamine or a karate monkey. The karate monkey look really nice but you can't run a rear disc and a rear rack which is annoying. Any opinions on these frames?

I may keep the langster, fix and use it as a beater as it was my first bike - sentimental like.

my mate got a crack in his langster in exactly the same place about a year ago and specialized replaced it under warranty.

I dont own either. But given the chioce. I'd go with the Surly every time.

    Mainly because of this......

The Singular peregrine would do the job nicely too.

  • I don't think I'll be getting any sort of warranty action from specialized, 5 years old and about 15,000 miles, unlikely.

I'll have a look at the singular too. Need to make a decision pronto, having to take the little on on public transport at the mo which means also means a scooter, which means chasing her, which means fear of her swerving into a road, which is stressful. Having pull my trousers down from the safety of a bike seat is a lot nicer. Either that or I can pull my finger out and finish the trike so she can go in that.

  • You should offer up a DiaCompe BRS200 to the space, it might clear the chainring.

Might give that it a go - I've got a set of chorus calipers (dual pivot at the front / single at the back) which looks similar to that, and that doesn't fit.

Not really urgent anyway at the minute as I'm running it fixed, but it's been niggling at me.

    Thanks again

Lifetime warraty on SBC frames no?

  • Think I may get the pompetamine for cheapness and the fact that it looks very similar to what I'm riding at the mo. Does anyone know anything about sizing? Looks like I'll need an XL at 6'2".

  • Lifetime warraty on SBC frames no?

How would I go about that? Bought it from evans 5 years ago.

  • No receipt? Evans should have a record of the purchase, or could you not get a record of the purchase from your bank?

Check the thread out on here. If you're not after running anything much bigger than CX tyres. You'd be hard pushed to justify anything else cost wise.

There's a SS CX thread too, which will point you in the direction of other possibilities for a SS commuter which takes fatter tyres and a rack.

  • I suppose this is my current project at the moment. Going to use it for commuting and general dicking about.

  • frame arrived - the chainstays are insane - this is the chain as it was on the planet X track!!

same chain from the planet x, I suspect the mkm might have a shorter chainstay!!! by monomaniac(tom), on Flickr

it's going to be a 2 braked 3 speed fixed

  • Awsome looking frame.

  • ^ Seconded love the colour and it looks FAST!

  • Flouro slippers! Just won these on the bay...

Tilover, that frame is lovely, colour looks very similar to the Cannondale blue.

  • it's pretty scratched and to be honest I'm not a massive fan of the colour- will build it and see, I have 2 other colours in mind- it does look fast though!

  • No receipt? Evans should have a record of the purchase, or could you not get a record of the purchase from your bank?

Only if you do the postcode thing.

if you didn't do that, then Evans don't have it in their record.

Alu can be repaired, easier than you think. Just have to find someone who would do it. I know people on the south coast but not up in London. There are bound to be people on here.

  • Did anyone say lifetime warranty yet?

    oh. they did.

  • just to get an idea of the build out of spares in the office NOT these bars! not a fan of ergos but trying to source some compact drops and i need a rear brake too

  • The angle of the seat tube looks mental, massive layback.

I've got 700x35 Marathon Racers on there at the moment, mounted on 38mm Kris Holm rims they actually blow up to 37.5mm and you could still get a mudguard into the space between the top of the tyre and the fork crown/wishbone. On narrower rims you'd have plenty of space, the tight bit is between the chainstays, hence the 'skinny' tyres rather than the 700x40 Marathon Supremes I had in mind when I bought it.

  • Bit of an update from me.

Planning to clean my bike this weekend, will probably use a combination of Muc-Off and warm/hot water. Will probably pat the excess water off with a tea-towel, then polish with Turtlewax.

Will post before and after photos for you.
