Will...
buy decent cranks, a good sealed bottom bracket and sealed bearing wheels...
These things won't cost you a great deal more but are worth while in the long run and you're guaranteed more time enjoying your ride.
But consequently less time in the bike room / shed / garage fettling.
Gotta make time to fettle.
Will - with the above in mind, get old stock with serviceable bearings wherever you can, a copy of the Parktool Big Blue book, a good selection of grease, and plenty of spare bearings.
Re: size, how long are your legs / torso? 58 sounds about right if you're normally proportioned.
-
• #46331
I ride the 58 - it does come up small but I have a freaky long torso. Just get a good long stem something like a 120mm deda 01 will probably fit you depending on your exact proportions.

rhb - sealed bearings trump old stock serviceable every time for me... what good is your time spent fettling going to do you at the track on Saturday?*
*am gobbing off now, but doing liverpool leeds on thursday so think my legs may be a little empty by saturday...
*also, I think I have too many bikes on the go, there is a never ending list of repairs and replacements, replacing parts that need servicing with new parts that will last forever is just lightening my work load long term.

Willpalmer buy these cranks. they are a bargain.

Hey Negaatio, was that you i saw pushing this beaut along Bishopsgate maybe Thursday or Friday last week? I shouted 'nice bike' as I rolled by.
quite likely, although I had a little bit of fever so my ears were somewhat not working properly and cant recall hearing that. Thanks anyway :)
-
• #46335
Yeah, the Pompetine forks have a disc mount but I've read that there are clearance issues if you don't run centrelock discs and I'd really like to get the halo hubs.
I've got a 6-bolt disc in my Pompetamine fork, no problem at all. Best to stick with the Pompetamine fork if you get a Pompetamine, it's about 10mm longer axle to crown than a Project 2 or other cyclocross forks, and you don't want to mess up the steering geometry.

Ah, cheers mdcc_tester, that's good news as they're also half the price of the P2s and the Croix De Fer. Maybe they had clearance problems with an early batch. I thought the P2s would have been taller as I was thinking they would be aimed at 29ers but anyway sounds like the Pompetamines are the way forward.

my fettle time will be a handy excuse when I'm slowest once again ;)

This would put him way over budget and with a chainline off by 4mm.

just practicing the ability to not quote the whole lot.
and i'm trying exactly the same maybe trying to squeeze down to about 450£my build list is going
frame- £140
bars+stem- £30
crankset+bb- £115
wheels- £100
saddle- £60
carbon forks- £40
brake levers- £20
total- £505Although I've just realised I haven't accounted for tyres, tubes, a brake, the cable and bar tape. So it might be £550 overall.
It would be easy to save money on things like the cranks, forks and saddle though.Your money should go on the bits that spin, so BB, HS and HUBS being priority.
Your wheels cost less than your frame.... and your saddle costs more than half of the wheels.
Something tells me yourenotdoingitright. -

Could be, but it doesn't matter how tall you are (only), but your inseam length.
I'm slightly short of 6'2", just like you, but I have the inseam of a midget - 840mm.
This means I don't really care for c-t, it's the tt size that matters for me.
I can easily fit a 55/56 seattube w/o having scandalous amounts of SP showing. -

WILL PALMER
Do yourself a favor and dont go near the visp - its not a deathtrap, but its a crap heavy generic frame with little thought gone inot design or production

About that TA Specialites Alize crank, Planet X do them now in their sale, in 165, without chainring for a measly 65,99.. Talking bargains.. I keep to it 130bcd is a nuisance for track chainrings, but TA make their own very good ones of course..
-
• #46345
Do they have a standard chainline?
Edit ---> they have a 43.5mm chainline with a 111mm jis bb.

or stronghlight 2000, cheaper and have a chainring

The Stronglight Mygal is £50 with chainring from PX at the moment. The silver version was on my beater for a year and a half and did a great job (note that you need to put the chainring on the inside of the spider for a standard 42mm chainline). Agree with flickwg though, I would go for the Track 2000, it's only ten quid more and much beefier.

I bought the stronglight 2000s recently from PX. Nice, and a damned good price. They don't suit the bike I put them on (brown pompino) but I needed something to get me back on the road...

i want something crisper, faster, lighter, stiffer, more responsive, quicker off the mark. and i reckon an aluminium track frame would be that, whether is a cheapo one or a top range one. It's been said before.... nelson pista!
Seriously.
