Oh bugger, thats similar to what I'm doing at the moment! Damn.

Except mine is a lugged frame, so I'm going to remove all the paint, let it rust, then polish the lugs so you've got the difference between shine and rust on the frame. Also have a few polished components on the bike to match the lugs.

Is the rusted / polished effect good for the frame in the long run? Is there a point at which it's possible to stop the rust rusting further?

As a lazy tight git I'd be more than happy to do this with the frame I've got waiting to build up, simply to save on the cost and effort of getting the paintjob re-done... anyone offer links to wider chat about this type of finish?

That was the deciding factor... cheap as chippy chips... although I may get it clear coated properly, if not rattle can matt clear coat cheap-ass styley.

ahh, i do like old steel MTBs...i've got something on the go using an old steel kona, but it's all a bit hush hush at the mo :)

It's going to be stripped and resprayed the same but with metal flake, SS and and some nice Paul canti's. Going to remove the decals and scan them to make nice new ones. Will keep you posted.

DILEMMA:
a) drill fork (puppies will die, i guess?)
b) get clamp-on brake (looks shit, brakes pretty shit too)
c) ride brakeless (losing front teeth in a crash once is enough, thank you)
d) get another fork
e) sell frameset on

mental note to self: next time think about the front brake situation BEFORE buying a frame ;)
