  • it's a 1" steerer. Also I may be being stupid, but how would they help?
    cheers

  • hold it all together nice and tight?

or you could just get a lower stack stem? headset looks low as it is.

  • Lower stack stem and headset are the only save solution. But i don`t think that will be enough. If your a little bit brave i would suggest getting a propper shim and only using the lower of the two clamping screws on the stem. This will hopefully have the same effect as the usual spacer on top of the stem. Regarding the top cap you can do what you want as it is only used for adjustment and not supposed to carry any load while riding.

  • Can you thread a carbon steerer? :S

    whoop, didn't notice it's carbon.

  • i really liked them when i rode a bike with them, was a nice ottadini

that got donated to action 21, all i had to do with pump up the tires, felt like i was using bullhorns when i held the top of the drops, wasn't even touching the hoods

from the ITM product photo they reminded me of...

    /shameless trekkie knowledge

but on a bike build up they actually look pretty sensible! also see what you mean about being able to use the tops in a similar way to bullhorns, damn you! now I am rethinking, again! also the black ano is appealing, not keen on silver, but on a 70's build it would look a bit daft having no silver atall but i'm trying to keep the shiney silver content to a minimum :)

  • I think the only viable option is to get rid of the old forks, and get ones that have enough steerer.

    FFS!

  • Have the cougar ones sold?

    why not just paint them?

  • Lower stack height stem and headset are the only save solution .. your Elite is 45mm high? the Elite X2 if you have to have Thomson is 36mm clamp height so that's a 6mm gain .. if you have to keep the forks then you need to do some research on stack heights, but by the time you've spent out on more stems and headsets I'd suggest you may pay for another fork!

  • Have the cougar ones sold?

    why not just paint them?

No but I've sold the headset, and have now installed the threadless headset, and bought the Thomson stem.

Now if only I can find a Wound up fork with enough steerer, yeah that'll do nice....

  • The X2 would be a 9mm saving, but that would still leave me .6mm of steerer below the top of the stem

  • Do not, under any circumstances, ride it in this condition. You will die.

Lowest stack height stem is about 38mm, 7mm less than your Thomson. Lowest stack height 1" headset is probably the Stronglight you already have - there are some very low stack 1⅛" sets, but only by about 7mm compared with what you have, and that's academic as they don't do them in 1".

  • ok .. it's late my maths is shit! anyway .. the point was it's possibly savable but at a cost

  • Lowest stack height stem is about 38mm, 7mm less than your Thomson.

    What stem is that?

That would be perfect then no?

  • I think you'd be better cutting your losses rather than your face when the steerer breaks.

  • nah would still be needing 8mm.

right new forks it is then! thanks one and all...

  • ah thought you said .6 mm not 6!

  • Anyone got some nice 1" forks knocking about? 240mm steerer :)

  • Anyone got some nice 1" forks knocking about? :)

You need to specify the steerer length!

  • You'll probably have to buy new, my steerer is about 27cm long and the only way I could find a fork with one long enough was to buy new.

  • Look at the sheer reach between the stem and the brake levers!

  • I think the only viable option is to get rid of the old forks, and get ones that have enough steerer.

    FFS!

This is the right course of action, I'm afraid.

  • The X2 would be a 9mm saving, but that would still leave me .6mm of steerer below the top of the stem

Use a stem with a lower stack height or fuck off the top of your headset???

  • +/- 20g scales came in the post this morning.

My target was 7.5kg, so I'm happy with where I have got to.

None of the parts have been weight limited "Weenie" bits, so hopefully I won't have to worry about them that much!

I think the UCI limit is safe from this particular 58cm Cannondale.

  • oh come on. fuck scales - give us the full pic
or have i missed it earier?

  • I've just remembered- I've got a DA cassette coming which should knock it down to 7.3kg
