  • I think that depends on what sort of riding you do, and actually I don't agree that taking off a handbrake makes you anticipate anything better or quicker than just learning how to ride properly in traffic.

    it's not about the bike.

  • Thanks for the comments on my bike, the disc is an old Ambrosio "By Logos", think it's fiberglass on a core of foam or something like that.. it's about 500g heavier than a modern carbon-disc.. the only not modern part on the bike.

    About track forks and drills.
Agree with most people here, don't drill track forks...

Brakeless isn't that much of a problem if you know what you are doing, at least not here on Copenhagen.. but okay, I guess traffic isn't as london as we have bikelanes on almost all roads and I think you do not have such luxery in London?

I'f been riding brakeless for about a year now every day without problems... And the carbon-monster above is going to be brakeless as well.

  • I don't just build bikes I restore them. When I see a classic bike broken up into parts or converted into something it ain't. I think well there goes a little piece of history. Might not matter to you? but I think a double plate fork makes this bike special enough to keep it together. Like I say all you really got to do is moderate your riding style and if you want a really fast bike try riding gears. something like 53 -14 ..;)

I can understand that... but it's just temporary, i mean it's not like the fork is going to be sold separately...

makes you a better rider - better anticipation - more fluid - useful skills that transfer to you other bikes -

ideally yes, but you can only anticipate so much, and there are far too many people on the roads that are totally disconnected from what's happening (drivers and cyclists with mobiles, peds & cyclists with iPods,...) that some extra stopping power can be useful... it's just not for me.

  • im not the one with the problem , all i was stating is you were not happy with not having a brake and it had a lot of toe overlap, so why not buy a bike your happy with in the first place?

Well i'm happy with the bike as I love its looks it was such a bargain. Stupidly I did not check the forks, because last month I bought another track bike from the same guy, also with a double plate fork which WAS drilled.
I just took it out for a ride and well I love how it rides as well.

All problems solved, and as I won't be riding the original fork, i will in fact be preserving a piece of history ;)

  • this place is ridiculous

  • I got brakes on my racing bike, and my commuter, no way do I go balls out unless I have brakes, still a nice classic track bike like this with double crown fork would be ideal for banging down to the pub/shops/gym and back, you know like a little neighbourhood beater - a beautiful bike is like a beautiful woman - needs to be shown off - don't ask Hippy - he thinks a woman is there to clean and cook

And this is why a fork swap is clever. You can still ride the bike and then when it comes time to sell it you have the bike complete and as it should be. You can always ride brakeless if you want or on the track but if you're not doing either don't ruin the forks just to fit brakes to a track bike. IMNSHO

  • makes you a better rider - better anticipation - more fluid - useful skills that transfer to you other bikes -

What if you race road bikes? Riding a brakeless fix is actually going to hamper your cornering/descending skills since you won't KNOW how to use your brakes correctly. You need to learn how much to modulate going through that corner or how they respond when the rims are wet or.. you see my point?

As for the anticipation thing, it just means you have to ride slower so as not to run into shit. Fluidity, perhaps. I'd rather be fast than fluid.

  • this place is ridiculous

    Glad you like it.

cool, i look forward to seeing it done

A beautiful bike is just something to look at.
I RIDE my bikes I don't spend my days staring at them.

You're suggesting using a classic track bike as a 'down to the shops' beater.
Methinks you're confused. Why not just build a beater? Save the track bike for the track or your front room.

  • Are we really having a brakes vs brakeless debate?

(I hope to have a new project to post in here around 3am. Ebay permitting).

  • like you are going to forget how to use your brakes just because you own and use a brakeless?

yeah you ride slower, well I do, but you read the traffic better which translates

believe or not there is more to it than just looking good

you little fibber you was posting that new Condor for days

what we weren't supposed to LOOK at it

there is absolutely nothing wrong in having a nice looking bike

    as to this one

sure take to the track if you want

AndyP is building up that beautiful Casati for the track

    wonderful

    but also

no problem in having a nice little beater

just because its a beater don't mean you have to treat in mean

rip off its lovely DP and stuff them under the bed

incidently DOGS if you are going tio break it up

can I have that Campagnolo RECORD pista headset

I have a horrible feeling you are going to hook it up with Corsa road cranks

you treat your bikes mean & nasty

  • Are we really having a brakes vs brakeless debate?

There's not enough action on here.. how else am I supposed to crack 20k??

  • True. Let me help you.

I prefer to ride brakeless and using Jamaica skids as my only method of stopping.

  • you little fibber you was posting that new Condor for days what we weren't supposed to LOOK at it

    You think this is nice?

I think it's a bit of a shambles but YOU are supposed to look at it simply because it's a current build thread. I built this for commuting to work on.. looks didn't enter into it, although it will look better with the proper rear wheel.

You are making up for your small penis by..

No, I'm in too nice a mood for this kind of dick joke stuff.. hehe dick hehe dick joke hehe etc. ;)

  • Yeah but you're a 'hippy'

    your 'look'

is supposed to be all dishevilled and uncoordinated

    can't pull that one sunshine

    if you are taking photos

    then you ain't riding

  • I still have no pictures to show, but the Storck is finally finished...properly!
Campag record front n rear mechs and shifters, nokon cables...so no more magic gear singlespeed...now to see how long i can hold off on selling it for.

    I took the photos because
    1) I need the evidence for insurance purposes
    2) I like posting shit here.. such as the bike I was building
    3) I take photos of all my bikes fugly or otherwise

If I wanted it to look good I wouldn't have blue-taped road bars on it, I wouldn't have the mismatched wheels, I'd have black cranks on it (say the 75s I have in the cupboard)

Shit.. now I've forgotten the original point..

  • I'll try and get object to take a couple tomorrow.

  • sweet
