Looks like any-old cloth bar tape. You can also use hockey tape. I've never used it purely as grip tape, but by all accounts it gives blisters, is thin, and generally uncomfortable. If you wear gloves then (which I guess you don't), I'm sure it'll be fine.
IME (which is limited):
#1 tape = Fizik suede with the gel inserts or an old innertube underneath. However, in total it is relatively expensive.
#2 Mavic Guido. Very good allrounder, and probably the best standard cheap tape you can get. Search on here for the thread.
Grips - I found v-strong good. Thin, but comfy, very grippy, still plenty of hipster points (despite probably being played out now).
Thanks! Not only do I wear gloves (so the clothtape will be fine?), but I love the looks of that stuff.
I've been running bars with a mixture of cellotape, ductape and electric tape untill recently, where I got so fat cushy carbon-imitation tape, which is alright but I'd go back to cellotape if I didn't spend the 8 bucks. Anyhow, how does that tape feel under wet?
Cheers!

Nice. Got the same cranks/seatpost/stem/headset on my Pompino, and the Salsa Lip-Lock instead of the Thomson seat collar, but meh.
nice! i'm almost hesitant about chucking all these parts on my steamroller (pig wearing lipstick?) but i don't care, i bloody well love that frame, ha!

Specialized Roubaix tape is padded and has that grippy fabric finish to it. Not cheap though.
IME the regular Cinelli cork tape is great. Not too soft, not too thin, grippy in the wet. All the really cheap tape I've tried has been horrible.

Alright thanks! I've got a pretty solid idea on what I think I should go for. I'll go see what the LBS's got.

It'll look awesome. My main priorty when choosing the parts for my Pompino a year and a half ago was to just get the strongest parts possible, and it looks and feels great. Just don't leave it anywhere for too long incase someone tries to nick the parts off it.

same here. want this to be a sort of all-day-ride-bike, hence the road drops and two aero brake levers.
luckily i have another bike for commuting so the steamroller will be kept for best (it'll be well looked after but in no way babied!)

I think you'll need to flip the stem if you want to do bar spins

wow! speedplay fixed? any good?
they're the track specific ones and tbh, they're my first pair of clipless pedals. had a whizz around on them the other night and found them way more responsive than clips and straps (bloody obvious, no?) but was really surprised at how little effort you have to put into them to control speed.

I dont think it would spin anyway :) Needs 26" front or something if I wanna do that. It's mainly for lols/statement about artistic cycling vs fixed freestyle/trolling/because I got fever and got bored with all this free time on my hands.
Gonna try it for some time though, as the roads are in pretty bad condition at the moment anyway, so that upright position aint even bad.

What bartape you running? Been unhappy with many I've bought, but from what I can see (not much) looks pretty grippy (thats what I'm after).
Hey, its Cat Eye cloth tape. Its pretty cheap but i'm a big fan of it. It can get a bit yuck in winter when it gets damp tho

Only just spotted this. Cheers JD, I know you mentioned it when we last met. I've only seen a few Dave Marshs, and mine has the most tame paintjob. He was a big fan of the stenciled grid and fade. Reminds me, I must call him for some decals, thinking about getting a respray, the paint is a bit tatty now in places. Lovely forks and wishbone stay on yours by the way.
Thanks. The paint jobs used to be one colour or bonkers fades or stencils.
About to try and persuade him to sell me a lo pro 24" front end that was built for the commonwealth games and ridden there. But it has the same stenciled grid paint job and wish bone back end. I have the catalogue from Dave with the bike in it. Disc rear and gold anodized campag cranks which i have to complete the build. -

What drop bar are you using? it look like a good shape.
I'd love to have the speedplay pedals, but the fact it take road cleat doesn't help.
There's an MTB one with recessed cleat that's apparently are great, unfortuantely the pedal look like some kind of toys, but ah well.

My next bike will have a fade paintjob.
That is all.

You mean like this kind of faded Josh?
If you do, that'll be fucking awesomeness of the highest degree.

Good job man. Hoping to do mine soon.

Well, with the wheels at 1730g and the stem at 173g, looks like the light bike build is out of the window :-(
But with these
and a set of full carbon forks on the way... Let me introduce the Plastic bike build

Did the seta not come with a full carbon fork?
Nice. Got the same cranks/seatpost/stem/headset on my Pompino, and the Salsa Lip-Lock instead of the Thomson seat collar, but meh.
