  • i'm starting my first ever project at the moment. Got a beautiful old ernie clements frame off of gumtree. Although i've been having some problems with the bottom bracket and was wondering if anyone had any advice. It's a really old BB with a cottered spindle and i want to replace it with a more modern BB. The only problem is i dont know how to get it out - there doesnt seem to be much about it anywhere on the internet and i dont really want to pay out for a shop to do it for me. Has anyone had any experience with these? And im very new to this so please be kind and keep it simple.

    Thanks

(i've attached a couple of images of the bottom bracket)

  • You need the tool with the tooth on the spanner, then it just unscrews in the normal way. You can bodge it with stilons if you are lucky, but that usually gouges the frame at the same time.

  • Lockring tool. be very careful.

  • .

    (ignore, repeating bigtwin)

  • As you're new, it's probably worth pointing out that getting the fixed (right, drive side) cup out is usually easier if you clamp the flats in a bench vice and rotate the frame. Don't forget it's a left-hand thread.

  • Love the bike MarP

  • Looks great! How does it handle? Like a dream I bet!!!

It rides pretty much perfect for what I use it for. All parts bar the brakes, seat post and stem have been scavenged from another bike I had, but I'm happy with it. Lighter wheels would be nice, but as well as long rides in the country, this bike is my daily training/commuting/general riding bike so sees a lot of shit roads and these wheels have proved to be utterly bomb proof and I don't really want to lose that for the sake of a little weight.

I did consider drops, but with this set up, the ends of the horns match up exactly with where I have the hoods on my road bike and that's where the vast majority of my riding on this bike would be done and I'd much rather use TT levers in that position than aero levers.

Also it's not nearly as bright as it appears in the picture here, at least on my monitor. The spokes look white here, but they're not. I did think about black components, but of my 5 bikes, 3 have black frames and 1 is Ti with all black components. I never planned it that way and wanted to try and lighten things up a bit with this one.

  • yeah i've got the lockring off, its the actual BB i'm struggling to get out.

  • Find the right tool or you can try some long nose pliers, has worked for me in the past.

  • yeah i've got the lockring off, its the actual BB i'm struggling to get out.

soak it with wd40 overnight dry off then heat it with a hairdryer or heat gun, then try again

Have you got the fixed cup out yet? Sometimes easier to do that first, get the axle and bearings out, then you have more methods at your disposal to get the adjusting cup out, as getting enough torque on a seized one with a pin spanner can be tricky. At least if you have the axle out from the other side, you can rig a clamp to stop the pins from camming out of the holes

  • Wanted to share my fixie-baby. Let me know what you think!

This is my first go at frame building, why buy a frame eh! all you need is a MAP can and a box steel jig :)

Its nice and simple, the style I like, and there are a few faults you probly cants see. But the joints are all penetrated and the alignment is accurate. The parts are all the cheapest i could get, with a couple of nice finds like the sexy curved GB bars. Just started uni so probly wont be another for awhile, looking forward to developing a signature/style.
in York if there are any riders out there! not met any so far!

long post, not a big forum type... lets see if i can upload pictures.

    Nice work!
I use to live in York, great place for cycling (unless you are really into hills), and some lovely country side only a few miles away. My favourite rides always involved coming down stairs on the bridges over the road from the university library and Alcuin college. Nowadays I get the fear just riding down a curb.

  • ^^Massively impressive work from both of you frame building types. I need skillz.

  • Max are you getting a Pompino? Here's mine (XL 57cm):

Goldtecs, Open Pros, Sugino 75, Thomson, SDG, Chris King, Avid Ti, Burgtec, Salsa, Ringle, etc - It's nice.

    Yeah bruv, looks nice !

Now 100% certain the XL will fit. Your bike looks pretty spot on for me.

Could you do me a favor please? I just want to know what the BB height (cm) is. Center of BB to floor, bike dead straight.

  • I just want to know what the BB height (cm) is

BB drop is 66mm with the stock fork. (If you use a different fork, subtract half the extra axle to crown height from the drop).

That should give about 275mm BB height with 700x28 tyres, unloaded.

  • @ ChrisMGS how is using the v-brakes with drop brakes? Which breaks are you using and which hoods?

Tektro RL520 levers. Same as the Cane Creek Drop V levers, but £28 cheaper (£17 Vs. £45):

Brakes are Avid Single Digit Ti. They work well together.

max - BB height is about 29cm. I am 6ft4.

  • Finally back on the road, just needs some cable crimps and some close clearence mudguards, probably some SKS Olympics:

  • forks sorted, wheels sorted (condorxcondor)

  • Gav, that looks beautifully done.

nice jig and very nice looking build. (that bb shell looks like it is stainless steel?) and where did you get the hollow section for the jig btw?

Maybe just swap the LH and RH down tube cable stoppers?
