Yeah but if you apply the theory as I suggested you would be looking more along the lines of a £50-60 chainset.
As I said not interested in the detail of Max's build just the general theory which you gave that is wrong. -

I don't have a general theory, I have a couple of specific examples. It's no good using completely different examples to suggest that I'm wrong.

Is the Pompino scratch proof ?
The Pompino simple function is purely being a bicycle, the sort that you ride it and enjoy the scenery of Oxford Street.

Decided to use 3 fixed cog instead of the old 3 speeds cog which were very heavy in comparison, look like a solid win there, I didn't buy the cog, I just took them off the shelf, put them on to see if it work and then put them back.
The whole hubs weight is a mere 500g which is an improvement over the original 660g weight with the original 3 speed freewheel;

what size cogs have you gone for?

Interesting...3 speed fixed.
I guess ur rear spacing is 120mm, right?

The chainline is going to be pretty crap on two of the cogs isn't it?
-

Prolly not as it'll be going through a derailier?
It's the lockring I'd worry more about.... altho there'll be 2 brakes one it, so that should reduce any risk. But Ed are you really going to locktite up a hub like that?

But a £100 chainset will have detachable chainrings, which a £10 chainset won't; a clear practical benefit, where there is no obvious benefit besides a small decrease in weight in going from a Pompino to a very slightly more expensive steel frame. Clearly putting a £400 Super Record chainset on Pompino might be regarded as a misallocation of resources, but my point stands. Show me a frame which is clearly better for Max's purposes than a Pompino, and then show me where you're going to save the money without compromising the overall performance.
Agree that a frame for a few hundred more won't be noticeably better although it is likely to be finished better and may be less dull to ride but neither of those things may matter for this purpose.
However, a £160 square taper chain set is no benefit over a £70 external BB chainset, in fact it is worse!
Anyway, the question I originally had was over the frame to parts cost ratio. But Max has answered that in the fact that the frame will be beaten about and take the most knocks. -

Fixed through a derailleur ? Ambulance please.

Its not meant to be fixed is it?

Screw on free wheel + 3 fixed hubs makes it fixed as far as I can tell.
Whats the argument against fixed deraliers? - too much force though the derailer? Would it make a difference if you were only ever going forward?

i think its a freehub

screw on cogs not screw on freewheel.

i think its a freehub
Bingo.
The derailleur I have is a 1/8 one design for a 3 speed transmission, because it's a freehub - no need for lockring.
SA 3 speed hubs - 1160g claim weight.
3 speed derailleur - 600g estimated weight.

Ahh now I understand. Very clever.
-
• #38524
surely the original freewheel only turns one way because of the ratchets, where now you have 3 fixed cogs so if you stop pedaling/resist they will unwind???
or am i as stoopid as usual? -
• #38525
How do you get the cogs off if it's a threaded freehub? It's not like you can slide them off
No, but it's not £400 either. Do try to keep up, detail matters in this discussion.
