Guys I cant remove this from the frame. I went o my LBS and they did not try help but advised I need a tool to get a good grip of it. I went to local hardware store and bought a big tool but still cant grip it enough to remove it. Sprayed WD40 on it and everything :(
I am getting the frame sandblasted and powder coated. Does it matter if I leave it and stick with the old bottom bracket?
This frame is a 1970's Hercules.

There are various freezing / penetrating oil aerosols that might be worth a try. "Freeze your nuts off" worked for me.... but my BB had been in for a lot shorter time than that one....

Try Plus Gas before the freezing spray. It's a proper penetrating oil, which WD40 isn't.

have you got the right size spanner as found in a bike tool kit?
if that doesn't work is there some way of drilling/cutting it to split it or something?
Or go to a workshop with a vice, grip the cup in the vice and turn the frame around it.
Are you turning it in the correct direction as well?

Try a vice?
If it comes to it, drill it out - if you damage the threads on the bb make sure you drill them out too, you'll still be able to thread a bb in.

Do try this...

Yes it matters. You want it removed.

So do i just spray it on the outside and inside?

If you can, soak it in some overnight.

Clamp the cup in a vice and use the frame as a lever to remove it.

Have you though about using a vice?
Thought I would ask in case you missed the other 3 suggestions of using a vice :-)

VICE ftw, after a proper soaking.

This happened twice to me.
Once I took it to a shop and they used a vice.
The second time I took it to a friend and he used a vice.
Have you tried using a big spanner (wrench)?
Alternatively you could try the sheldon method...
...but it doesn't really work. -

Has this been resolved yet?

Has he realised he was turning it the wrong way, and is too embarassed to tell us the score?

Right. So a cheeky ebay bid has landed me with an early 90s Simoncini made from Columbus SLX. It's got the pearlescent paint that looks either light purple or green depending on your vantage point. Lovely frame.
Looking for the rest of the bits to complete the build on ebay.
*Shakes fist at anyone thinking of bidding on my extensive watch list....

Ta. Campag alloy. Anything I can get my hands on. Probably will be a bit of a mix'n'match of campag bits a la teenslain's ride.
