  • ok i kinda get it... Still with the bits I have knocking about and the ease and potential for bargins I'm going to stick to deralliers.

    Just found this... tempting

  • I'm sure there was a bike posted in here quite recently (this summer at least) that ran a double with a hub gear. It was something with small wheels and looked really good. Is this commonly done? It seems like a good idea, but I've not really seen it much which suggests it has some draw backs.

will doing that result in a chainline that is always slightly off, like on a dingle setup that was talked about a few days ago?

  • The bigger issue with multiple rings on a hub gear is surely going to be that your drive ratio will be outside the manufacturer's recommended range, which means you'll be applying too much torque to the hub, which means either the hub's internal gears or the anti-rotation mechanism will break.

    e.g.

To prevent overstraining the hub, a minimum sprocket ratio of 2.35 must be used. With the available sprockets these minimum ratios are achieved by: 40/17, 38/16, 36/15 and 32/13.

  • interesting, hadn't thought of that. you'd feel like a right tit if you splashed out on a Rohloff and then broke it!

  • ^^ good point.

Maybe I'm too much of a conformist, but I just don't think mixing and matching random bits is a good idea for gears.

  • My latest bike, Stan Pike, you like?

Bought the frame from a gentleman on here, whom sorted out the paintjob and decals (so can't take credit for that)

TA cranks from my previous bike, and a Campagnolo/TA BB

Really like the spear point lugs etc, tidy as.

Put the wheels together myself - Alesa 9013 clincher's laced to Campagnolo Mozzi Record Pista low flange, Panaracer Pasela 23c tires.

  • I run a 3 speed hub and a 7 speed casette with a single chainring. It works great giving me 21 gears with no overlap. It would be easy to change the rear wheel to a SS/fixed set up. Haven't had any problems yet changing the shifters to sti.

  • Very nice corbleu :-)

  • That Stan Pike is tidy!

  • clincher's laced to Campagnolo Mozzi Record Pista low flange hubs

    Tautology.

  • I had to look that up, I've ammended my error, many thanks.

    Thanks for the kind feedback.

  • Campagnolo Mozzi Record Pista a flange piccole

Fixed the mixed language for you.

  • flange piccole - for Italians and poseurs who think they are tifosi
    low flange - for 'merkins
small flange - proper English usage

  • Quite right, I have the original box with all the correct wording, probably should have just copied it all.

I suppose I'll have to be referred to as a 'merkin' from now on, it could grow on me......wait ?!?

  • I'd rather have a low flange than a small flange. "Proper English" or not.

    e.g.

And if it's a coaster brake version, you'll have a bad/illegal brake function (power, backpedaling angle).

I had to check what a 'merkin' is.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merkin.

  • Definition 6b, the intention being to be even more gratuitously offensive to our colonial cousins than Septic

  • so this is my curent project, my loooooong term new project... bought from pitofski fom here. (thanks)

parts that will go on this frame:

sugino 75 cranks ( on its way )
    suzue promax hubs
    nitto stem+drops
    velocity deep v

well at least, thats the planning.

and maybe a repaint. well the repaint is coming for sure.

  • Another Neil Orrell with same set of components eh?

    you're not the only one;

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

And if you get a new paintjob, keep it as it is

  • thats what I was thinking! criminal to put velocity deep vs on it(Idont even want to ask what colour)! and the paint job is perfect as it is.

  • I just reconnected with my holiday's bike (father in law's unused bike). Last year I spent two days cleaning and refreshing it, this year I can start to have fun right away on the roads of Corrèze !

    Vitus 979 with Shimano 105

  • Nice! I've loved the old Vitus frames since they first came out.

i was thinking celeste for the frame and some pink deep v's?? hmm yes!

kidding tho...there is a lot more rust on the frame than i thought...so thats why the repaint...thinking about doing it like this:

( the color scheme, not the colors ) thanks ed)

anybody know where i can get orrell decals?
