my 40th present to myself....
Van Nicholas Amazon with Rohloff hub - very bizarre feeling on the commute this morning to have gears (and not having to pedal to change!)

Conversion blah blah, sell it on ebay. Whatever mate
Sorry man, but I don't get what I said wrong. I meant I intend to try to convert it, will probably get frustrated through general lack of bicycle knowledge and end up listing it.

Cheers tar! Was thinking of something along the lines of this rust removal technique, but then I might end up with no metal! Different thread I suppose.

Hard to tell from pic how bad the rust is, but once you've stripped it, try spraying with loads on wd40, leaving, then rubbing down with a roughish old cloth/teatowle. Then see how it looks.
After that try the electro way... looks good tho, I tried messing about with vinigar, but it didn' treally seem to do much for me.

V nice. Is there some kind of pully brake for the rear in the hub?

no, just hadn't connected the rear brake yet (paul cantis) needed to take it out for a ride after finally building it up

Impressively rusty Holdsworth which will soon go through a SS conversion/go back on ebay. Can anyone roughly guess its year of birth from the pics only?
Early 1960s, I'd say.
That's not that rusty. Give it a spray and wipe down with WD40 to clean it up. All the alloy bits will shine up with Autosol and elbow grease. You could probably salvage most of the chrome with the same technique, or at least get it back to bare metal. If you do convert it, keep hold of all the old bits or sell them on here/Ebay. And please don't get it powdercoated.

Love the paint on that Gorilla.

I would love to get Andels or similar for it. When I started the idea was to have a beater that I could kick about on and something without clipless pedals. I got a frame from Tel from here for next to nothing and started buying the cheapest components that ebay had to offer, hence the cranks. Then I got a bit carried away with the VO stuff :) I'll change them at some point either to the Andes or something more fitting if I catch something in the classifieds.
I've just got hold of a lo pro to play with now though and this one I want to do slowly and properly from the start, so the porter will likely have to wait.
Which frame was that? Can't recognise it....

Good luck getting the seatpost and stem out!

^ I thought that too... just didn't want to crush his dreams this early.
One tip, if/when you find out the stem is stuck and start reading sheldon. I'm 99% it'll be an expander:
I think that makes a difference for tips on getting it out?...something to do with hitting the bolt with a hammer?

That drawing is wrong; if your quill stem hits the butt of the steerer tube, something is wrong. Can be an issue with very short head tubes (e.g. lo-pro), hence the need to shorten the quill on the stem if you want to get it all the way down.
It is true that conical expanders get stuck and can be released by unscrewing the bolt until it's a couple of mm free of the stem and then giving it a little tap, and the wedge expanders rarely get that stuck, but the problem with the rusty Holdsworth is going to be galvanic welding of the quill to the tube.

Appreciate it Hugo! Well I'm due to go and pick it up today so I'll soon find out.

I'm sure that the diagram is illustrating what happens when you have a stuck stem, not what happens when you've installed a stem correctly.

Geared bike sold :( But built this in its place. I actually built the whole thing up in russel square yesterday if anyone happened to spot me. A park warden came over and asked me not to leave 'those old frames' when I was done.

Really nice.
Where did you get the chain guard? I presume it's new since edscoble has a pic of the same thing. And what are the mud guards?
