Just thought I'd put up the results of my polishing...
before:
after:
... the frame had a sort of ingrained dirt/discolouration, which I sanded off with a worn down sanding sponge and GT85
Then I got T-Cut and applied liberally and then rubbed vigorously with an old cloth.
Some of the paint is quite badly damaged, so I sanded those areas down and used Jenolite to treat the rust.
I tried the vinagar bath thing on the forks... it wasn't very sucessful... maybe it wasn't strong enough, maybe the dirt/discolouration was too bad, but it didn't work for me.
... After respraying my Carlton I kinda miss the old worn-out / original look. BUT I want to make sure the frame is sound and paint won't deteriorate further.
I was planning on clear coating it myself - is it a bad idea to wax the frame before I do this?
(I'm going to check threads for clear coating)

Some drops, doubles and a fluted seatpost would make that bike.

Which bike?

The Gazelle. You should use some road drops on your Roberts if you like riding on flats or risers. Track drops might have two much of a sweeping curve for you.

doubles???

toe straps.

It already has them...?

That could be a good compromise i guess... still prefer risers though :)

Looks like velcro to me

I acctually had rode drops for a few months and quite liked them, then bullhorns and liked them aswell, recently track drops which i didn't like, and now risers and i love them!

it took me a while but i ride track drops, when i first used them i couldnt skid or track stand with them, now its second nature, that frame would really suit track drops on it imho

horses for courses, frankly it's always easier with a bar that's suitable for riding on the road.
track bar + new oxford street (before they clean it up) = argh.

Agreed, tidy Roberts...
Well my winter/ off road/ big tyre (ish) bike is about on schedule - cranks, bars and headset are winging their way as we speak the away we go. Gone for a slightly bmx/hhsb look as there's nowt 'classic' about the frame anyway. 2 weeks and we'll be off!
What frame?
Is it one of those Saracens off Ebay? -

Track drops suck on the road! Road drops are much better (surprise surprise).

Ye maybe, i know drops look great but i just don't find them as practicle as risers, i'd rather have a bike which rides really well, then riding track drops and using them only because i think they look nice (not that i'm suggesting you are of course).
I might just have two bar stem combo's and switch from drops to risers. -
• #16447
That was also my plan. Still haven't switched back to the risers, I just prefer the range of hand positions.
-
• #16448
mainly why i use drops more positions as i ride 9 hrs a day its good to move around a lot
-
• #16449
Currently I have this bar (Modolo equipe without groove);
not the prettiest bar ever, but defintely a lots more comfortable and have more hand position than track bar.

hmm, dont get it, i ride down oxford st everyday, ive rode with risers on and track bars, oxford rd is shit, whatever bars youve got on, it made no difference to me
Just finished putting on the stem and headset last night. Very dissapointed about the headset, but it seems I have a very obsolete type of fork steerer, so don't really have many options. I also made a bit of a pig's ear of putting the bar tape on, but hey, it'll need changing some time...
Also have a Charge spoon black saddle waiting for my seat post to be sprayed white by the same guy who did my F+F (for free-he's a professional, but also a good friend), some Halo Aerorage flip/flop wheels(black), an eighthinch black crankset, and a Vélo Orange BB (the last two items not ordered yet). Oh, I also have a white chain
Currently on the bike are :
Campagnolo veloce calipers
Profile Design bullhorns with Velox bar tape
Cane Creek TT levers
All on a 531 frame (not sure about forks, no stickers...)
and a no name headset.
