Are you running double with 11-42?

They’re bomb proof but cheap, poor quality control and really stiff/hard to get round. Tick a lot of boxes for a rim brake beater/tourer though.

46/30 chainset, yes. Cassette is an 11-40, but the XT M8000 long cage derailleur has capacity for 11-42 with this chainring combo.

XT M8000 SGS, 11 speed. There is still tension on the derailleur while in the 46x40 gear, which I'm basically never in (just now for the picture). No issues whatsoever.

Thought capacity was only for 1x

Amount of chainrings only limits the maximum biggest cassette sprocket. Which in the case of 2x is a 42t. Overall capacity of the derailleur is 47T in all cases.

Have yet to properly try this new guise. Reckon will get plenty of flats with these tyres, but currently don't feel the need for tubeless.

I’ve got one of the Andra 321 disc rims on the back of my commuter as wanted something bomb proof, debating attempting to set it up tubeless.

although I like tubeless, one big piece of glass on the commute could result in a messy fix rather than a quick tube. Also have a pile of wire bead tyres I need to work through.

Exactly. Came from a triple with lowest gear 30x36, and had to walk one time up a 20% grade during last summer's Wales tour. So I think 30x40 should be good. Otherwise I can still install an 11-42.

And in non-tour mode (without racks, mudguards, etc), the 46T big ring and 11-40 cassette combo basically allows me to use the bike as a 1x gravel grinder here in the flat Netherlands. I think this could be a pretty ideal setup (for me).

Massive thanks to @smirri for the frame. Always nervous getting a frame from a stranger in a foreign land, but I need'nt have worried. Absolutely top communication, before, during and after transaction, absolutely top bloke. And it was the best packaged bike frame I've ever received, it took a reassuringly long time to un-pack it all :)

Thanks also to @ootinni for the saddle, which spent some time on my Simoncini before being commandeered for this build.

And also big thanks to Cam from Banzai bikes who ordered the last few parts I needed, and helped me put it all together yesterday faster than I could have myself. Which meant today I was riding around with a grin like a kid on Christmas morning. Such a smooth riding bike, perfect for a larger than average unit hacking around London's pave imitating shit roads. Even with the not light Shamals, overall its much lighter than I was expecting, descriptions of it being tank like and overbuilt had me thinking it was going to be a beast to handle and get going, but its such a confidence inspiring bike I was chucking in around within minutes like I'd been riding it for years.

Cheers, I'm a bit more a cheapskate tho ;)...Chorus front and rear mechs, and shifters are Centaur but are my favourite, the ultra shift version.

Yeah it seems to be exactly that, a Campag one apparently, its defo alu underneath, with as you say a carbon finish. Same 102BB as a Chorus. It was like that when I got it from eBay, so don't know exactly.

Yes, I want 1989 C-Record groupset to mount, incl. sheriff star hubs 🙂 I already have the wheelset, syncro levers, stem, handlebar, seatpost binder bolt; all the rest would be collected this year, hopefully. But there is another running project, so first I have to complete the other one 😀

My '98 Rockhopper on it's shakedown ride (a tough commute to Marylebone from SE1). Saddle needs a bit of forward tilt and raising a touch. I could get away with dropping another spacer on the stem probably, but will wait for some more miles.
