  • DIY ano removal. Tedious but not so bad in front of the TV.

  • Wow looks great, how tall are you?

  • Did you just use fine grit sandpaper?
How do you preserve the shiny surface? (not talking about the notebook... (-:)

  • I used the most coarse grit I had, 60, because removing the ano takes a bloody eternity. Once you've got that off the I just polished it up as normal, think I went 150→240→1000→1500→Mother's Mag.

Really half arsed it because it won't be going on a fancy bike or anything, so no one's going to get a close look at it. You can see for example that I didn't bother to do the tabs for the crank bolts as it was an awkward area and I couldn't be bothered. But if you look up Jeff Jones XTR cranks people get them to a mirror finish - probably just a couple more hours of work (same process, just a different crankset).

Preserving it I don't know! I was googling the Jeff Jones XTR cranks for ages trying to find some example of them after being in use for a year but nothing came up. Decided I didn't really care that much and could always polish them again (the Mother's Mag and fine grit sandpaper only takes a few mins). I think you can top coat them but I don't have any around so not going to bother.

Also did a seatpost and might do a stem as well.

Edit: this guy did a great job with power tools, I can't read Spanish though. Here's some very shiny Shimano road cranks

  • thanks :) about 2m or 6'6" in Brexit money

  • Thanks a lot. Sounds like quite a bit of work.
    The result looks great though!
Gonna try to do the same thing to a pair of S300s once I've found a cheap pair on ebay.

  • I can’t stop looking at the Yates. If you ever decide to sell it, I would bite your hand off.

Load it in google and it’ll translate the page for you?

Really hate those crank shoes he’s put on it afterwards!

    Noted ;)

  • Yeah the crank shoes are ugly...

Translated it, some good info actually. He did it with sandpaper but polished with those discs in some machine or other. Guy lower down in the thread says wiping WD40 on works to preserve them??? Weird

  • Jack Taylor & Ephgrave are wonderful

  • The Yates would be more hip hop with a rack and flatbar than the Roberts.

  • New wheels on the beater, scrubbed the tyres as well.

Meaning to adjust the stays or introduce a half link to help close that gap on the rear mudguard..

Selling the old set if anyone’s interested.. Mavic MA3 to Miche hf track hubs. £30

    Pic?

  • Ah ta, will pass for now

  • Old and new - not just the Hub ! - current project - 2 speed fixed wheel for an easier time up the hills - bought a Sturmey Archer TF 2 speed fixed hub 1934 - but 40 hole rims are not common these days unless you want a heavy thing for Tandems - light-bicycle.com do up to 36 hole carbon aero rims inc tubeless and were fantastic - just asked if they can do a 40 hole rim = no problem , delivered in a week and no extra cost!! So going to build 1934 SH TF hub into 2008 45mm deep carbon aero tubeless rim with Sapim CX-Ray spokes Stainless.

  • huh i didn't need an hanger extender with my shimano long cage and that cassette

  • drain cleaner works well to burn it of, will save you a load of effort.

  • I thought about it, but I don't have a garden or anywhere safe to do it - there are lots of dogs and kids and so on walking about - and my girlfriend (who is a chemist) strongly warned against it without gloves and glasses etc. Just took an hour in front of the TV like I said so no big deal. If I was doing a frame or something bigger or significantly more intricate I would use it

  • makes me want to finish building mine!

  • Comes down to hanger geometry I think. There was no way it was working, worked first time with the goatlink though.

  • Previously I put a large heavy ceramic bowl in the sink in front of an open window. I also used pound drain cleaner, as im pretty sure its not a strong concentration. It still does the job slowly, but gets there. However safety first etc
