Had my head turned by great big lumps of beef shank in Waitrose
Nice looking cut. Funny how shank is a more palatable name than shin.

Last night: ottolenghi spiced lamb-stuffed peppers and swiss chard dressed with lemon, garlic and tahini. Crap pics but I was half cut.

It really looks delicious. Never had swiss chard, what's it like?

Thanks Machine. Swiss Chard is really delicious. It is like spinach but more grown up and earthy flavoured. The stalk and leaf are both edible. It does not have a good shelf life so is rarely found commercially, but we has some growing from autumn-sown seed in our greenhouse which has come good.

Really? I have always had chard available in california and here in Berlin. In Argentina it is practically the national vegetable. In fact, I used to like it, but aside from glorious grünkohl (kale) season it is the only green they have so I am now pretty sick of it.
What do you have for greens in your markets? If you regularly have dandelion greens, or any of the Acephala group* of Brassicas (kale, collard, or 'spring greens') I am totally jealous.
Oh or the italian wildish broccoli (rapini?)

^ I got a bit lost in your post there... Whats the question?
-

Well, you had never had swiss chard, and Olly was saying that it was pretty rare on the shelves so I wondered what greens you did have in your, respective, necks of the woods.
Or do you not really have greens? It seems like everybody has greens of some sort (dark leafy vegetables that you boil or steam or saute) so I would be surprised.
Greens are like my favorite thing and I spend a stupid amount of time trying to figure out how to find a good supply of them. One thing that is a little frustrating is that at the vietnamese markets here they have taro roots, but not the taro leaves which are great when cooked down some.

Hi, sorry was generalising a bit, but when I said commercially, I meant in the big supermarkets (in the UK). I've seen it in Farmers' markets but infrequently.

I grow my own swiss chard, it's a really easy veg to grow as it will literally grow anywhere. Grab yourself a window box and plant em.

He's one for you guys.
I'd like an amazing vegetarian lunch, not too expensive, for less than a tenner and near to a branch of Co-Op bank.
Any suggestions?

I'll just leave this here in advance for anyone who still finds vegetarianism challenging and wants to make a funny.

I think Pistanator has flounced so you're probably safe. Nurse has mentioned some veggie curry places which sound amazing somewhere upthread.

Where are you? Food for Thought in Covent Garden is always tasty. No idea about the co-op branch though.

I'm in Brixton, heading towards Tottenham and not in a rush, so I'm quite open to suggestions.
Food for Thought is good, I've not actually been there in ages.
I'm currently edging towards either Diwana buffet, which is consistently amazing, or Pilpel falafel so I can try and score some cheap stuff from my old work at the same time, but I'd really like to try something new as well.
Doesn't have to be a vegetarian place as long as there are some good things on the menu.

Make a detour out to North End road for some falafel the way my Tetta makes them.

^^^ I went to Sagar on Percy street off Tottenham Court road on Saturday and had paper dosa. It was really good, they do cheap lunch deals too.
