  • Anyone know where I can buy middle eastern cheese? Got a taste for it but can't find anywhere that sells it in the uk

I'll ask next time I'm in Nour Cash & Carry, they're Iraqi owned... There's loads of interesting looking stuff in the dairy cabinet...

You could always tweet them and ask... @NourCashCarry

Turkish grocers/delis are awesome, there are a couple in south London and loads up north London way... I love the cylindrical cheese they do, delicious... Turkish feta is great too...

  • We're having gallettes forestiere this evening. With bacon.

  • I'm having a stab at dadar gulung today. Serving mine with condensed milk on top.

^ Try your LTS (Local Turkish Shop) and if they don't have any I bet they know where you maybe able to get some.

Thanks guys. Do you know anywhere with an online store? I should have mentioned i'm down in Bournemouth!

  • Having lived around there, it is a LOL.

Big Bowl Noodle on Phillip Lane is acceptable.

Marmalade is a nice cafe on Lordship Lane (sandwiches, cakes, and average coffee).

There's a sweet pizza place opposite Bruce Grove station that does pizza by the 1/2 metre. Their pasta isn't too bad either.

Green Lanes isn't very far from there and is a good shout.

Where is good on green lanes around haringey station? All I see is a sea of same same Turk places and the Salisbury that does insanely overpriced awful food

  • My first go at Bahn Mi..

I was a bit late last night when I decided to try and make this, so I didn't have access to all supermarkets and shops that I needed for the proper ingredients.

First of all I couldnt make the bread myself, so I just bought a baguette which I baked off myself.
Then the supermarket that was still open didnt sell daikon, and I had only about 2 hours to pickle the carrots. I refused to buy picked ones in the supermarket cause they're filled with who knows what.
I'm at my parents place so I don't have my favourite fish sauce here and had to use some crappy, yet expensive stuff.
But the worst part was the meat. It was indeed some kind of salty cured stuff. To be honest the structure of the meat after braising was very pleasant, but it was so extremely salty.. Almost too salt to be able to enjoy the baguette, but I put quite some time and work into it so I finished it no matter what.

It wasn't the perfect thing, but for a very late midnight snack I had nothing to complain!

The salty stuff cooking with onion and garlic

Starting to look and smell good

Braising with water, fish sauce and peppercorns

    Starting da caramel

Ready to add to the meat

    Braising all together

    Colour is getting better

Preparing the other ingredients. Pre-mixed some soy sauce with mayo

At this point I couldn't resist trying some of it. I could already taste the saltiness, but in spite of that it tasted quite nice

Warm bread, starting to look like Bahn Mi

Wrapped it in some foil to make it easier to eat. Very salty indeed, but I could level that a little bit with a can of coke.

A whole lot of work for a sandwich, but I'm sure that if it's prepared with the right ingredients it's definitely worth it. Will try and make it again some time soon!
Oh and by the way: FUCK that cilantro has an amazing effect on the sandwich. Simply perfect match!

  • chips?

  • ^^^^
Cant help you out there mate. I'm in the Netherlands so wouldn't know of a good place for you to order such foods.

Bahn Mi goes with chips? I'm a total noob here..

    Gokyuzu is awesome

  • You must be winding your piss out on a fork after that salt feast. Still, good effort and it got a lot better looking as the pictures went on!

  • You must be winding your piss out on a fork

I can't quite figure this out.

  • Science...

  • Magnets?

  • Dude, have you ever done that thing where you piss near a magnet?

    Just me then...

  • Eat iron fillings and spinach; piss near magnet.

    That's my evening sorted then.

  • don't forget to wank in a cup. facing magnetic north.

  • This thread is on a downward spiral ><

  • Not from where I'm standing.

(Yes, I got the piss stream topography pun).

  • Pigging out on gooey Swiss cheese spread on sliced baguette, because I'm no respecter of boundaries and am well up for a slice of ideological brouhaha.

Mankind would be nowhere without bread and cheese, but I'd be a lot slimmer.

  • minstrels and cheap whiskey. the taste of tomorrow.

That's ace NH, thanks a lot. I will check some of them out. Let me know if you're stopping by on your way to Romford sometime!

  • Also, savoury pancakes with mature cheddar, spinach, sundried tomato and roasted red pepper with a nice leafy salad and beetroot with red wine vinegar, followed by sweet ones with Nutella, peanut butter and banana and then lemon and brown sugar, mmmmmmmmm.
