  • Go Team Madrobar!

    bikes in general so......................Fuck Off....M

I never skid, especially at Richmond Park.

    'peace bro'

  • While surfing in Bude in 1990, a mate fell off the back of his surfboard, which then hit me in the back of my head. I made a grab for the board intending to shove it down his throat, but he was wearing a lesh, so I missed it. Really saved him that lesh.

    Carry on :)

  • NO wai!!!1!

The should be a list of people like him, so you know if there are any in your neighbourhood. We have to protect our children from predators.

  • yes you can anticipate the unexpected, why don't you take cycle training and find out?

    'peace bro'.

Ed; serious question, have you had cycle training yourself?
As for anticipating the unexpected; I see what you mean, a car door opening would be unexpected but you can anticipate that it *might *happen and ride accordingly. But then what about a snapped chain; it would be unexpected, you can think that it might happen but what can you do about stopping safely if you have no front brake? There are always people on here - yourself prominent among them - telling single speeders to have front and rear brakes just in case their front brake cable snaps; the unexpected, I suppose. Broken cable, snapped chain, is there that much of a difference in how unexpected they are?

  • Also, not wanting to fuel the brakeless/braked debate, but I had a 4x4 turn right across me last year. No indicating, or tell tale slowing down and moving across the lane. They just TURNED and were suddenly about to run me over. I was doing about 25mph and had a brake, and it saved me from having a very bad day. No amount of 'skill' or reading the road could have seen it coming.

Turns out it was a women, in a Range Rover, on her phone, with kids in the back. How stereotypical.

  • I hasn't had cycle training, but I do feel that I am a safe cyclist, and are able to ride sensibly and follow the highway code (i.e. no RLJing), I feel I can read the road reasonable well to able to ride sensibly, in the last year I never had any collison, just close call that I've successfully avoided every now and then.

As for the brakes, the main reason I recommend people to ride with front and rear brakes is the amount of control of riding the bike, rather than the possibility of the brake cable snapping, and of course it's a hypocrite of me to warn people not to ride without brakes when I ride without them, I'm quite aware of that, but frankly I'm not going to tell them that it's fine to ride brakeless, that'd be the last thing I want to said.

As for the chain, it would be quite hard to try and snap a chain if you check it regularly and making sure there's no possible deformation/wear, frankly, a brake cable failure is more likely to occur than a chain snappage.

I'm not going to jusified myself of riding brakeless, because there's nothing to jusified, I just like to ride brakeless, but it doesn't mean it's the 'right' way to go.

  • I want to use a brake but my fork doesn't have a muh-fuck'n hole to fit one. Dashed again!

  • so ed, you tell people to get cycle training without ever having seen them ride or having it done yourself, tell people to have two brakes for control while having none yourself (and still think you are a responsible/safe/sensible cyclist?)? why not just refrain from saying anything about topics that you have no authority to be talking authoritatively about.

  • Some people have the power of God behind them which will help them stop if needed. Just have some faith, J.

  • Just have some faith, J.

are you referring to me as j?

    :s

  • I have the cycling equivalent of this device, designed for brakeless runners.

  • good ratio for brakeless? the bigger the better

  • I just chuck this over the side if I want to slow down.

Seriously though, do we need this discussion? I don't ride brakeless because I don't think I'm a good enough rider to be in full control without a brake. Doesn't mean other people can't be though.

  • everyones a critic. if you wanna ride brakeless then do it. but there isn't anything you gain from riding brakeless, except maybe confidence. ride what you want how you want... if you cut me off though expect to be hitting the floor when i catch you up... cunts

also dont complain if your chain snaps and you have no brakes or you hit a car because you cant stop properly

Ed doesn't walk his bike fast enough to really need brakes.

Good, comfortable shoes perhaps, but not brakes.

    :)
