to calculate approximate gear inches:
G.I. = (chainring/cog) * 27 inches

Hi Provenrad.
Let me just get my fucking abacus and figure this shit out.
Surely you just bung the front and rear in your iphone app or online thing and it spits out the number, no?

Do you have brakes on your Campbell Brothers Bonzer? (assuming you own your avatar)
You control a brakeless bike exactly the same as you would a Bonzer in a busy lineup. Reading the conditions and anticipating others actions become second nature and should something unexpected occur you will have the skill/experience to deal with it effectively. If not, then **|³|MA3K **is completely correct.
39/17 for me btw. Never really going fast enough to bother anyone.

No names but I ride regularly
with semi-pro cyclists from 70-80sThe guys I sometimes ride with have some pretty impressive swimming badges. Including the one you get for making a small canoe out of your PJs. Next time I see them I'll tap up them for some fixie skidder opinions.

if you think you need more than around 70" (42 X 16) sell your bike and buy a car or get the train, or contact a pro team
Total Tosh ... I ride 70 all the time and it is too small on the flat. 72-75 is about right. 80 would be ace for my current commute since it is flat.

seconded.
I mainly fixie-skid out of town, so dont start/stop very much. But I've always felt comfortable on my 48:16. For longer rides (>50km) I drop to 48:17.

Cheers, I have revised my requirements and I am going to go for 42/15, which gives 74.9". 15t EAI sprocket ordered :-)
One further question, according to the Rabbit singlespeed calculator, tire width seems to have an effect on gear inches, i.e. 700x28c is 74.9" and 700x25c is 73.9" for the ratio of 42/15. I can see how tire diameter would have an effect, but not the width?

Too small? you must have very poor pedalling technique then.
He's right, in a roundabout way, 70 is plenty for a road fixed. 30mph is only 150 RPM. -

And what also increases on a tyre when it's width increases?

Fucking bull..........sorry mate but I DONT believe you....unless you like to
rock at 10mph......You cant read a door opening on you....what you gonna do
....use your legs...?....Im sick of this wank .....I watch you Brakeless twats and
its just embarassing ....Ive followed a few of you so called messengers.....what a
fucking joke ......so busy "anticipating" you cant go more than 10mph....get a brake
get a life.....MAnd you dont skid ?.....and your uber-legs will pull you out of the
shit when your spinning out down......say...Putney hill .....and it all comes on
top cause of whatever......a gaggle of pre schoolers fall out the back of a car
in your path....Your fucking legs wont stop you ....especially when you skid into
the side of the bus that in the other lane.....TWATS...Just speaking the truth....you will need more than a nurse if you keep rolling
with no brake.....It cracks me up that otherwise obv. intelligent people can
seriously claim to be safe with no brake..........No names but I ride regularly
with semi-pro cyclists from 70-80s and brakeless TWATs are considered the
lowest pt on the evoloutionary scale....and simply irresponsible CUNTS....MIm not trolling......I do believe its totaly irresponsible to ride Brakeless...
I wont post on the subject again as its obv. pissing in the wind.....I have ridden
with most of you as it goes ,,,,,and that sure did'nt convince me otherwise....
its cutting of your nose to spite your face............save it for the Track....MAre you asthmatic? Or just that weirdo that has been phoning me at 3 am every morning?

The tire radius increases by a tiny amount - gotcha.
-
• #125
the tire radius increases by the same amount, not just a tiny amount, as the tyre cross section is round!
Good post, completely agree.
