  • im asking what is good.
    but isnt too outrageous

  • That C200 is pretty ok, and it's really cheap. About €3 here. Give it a try.

If you want sharper / finer grain / really nice colours you have to pay more,
Kodak Ektar / Portra, Fuji Pro 400H etc. - they are around €6 here.

There also is this new Agfa slide film, Precisa CT - which you can get in drugstores where I live,
two for under €9, which is really not expensive given it's really good.

None of the good film are "outrageously" priced imo (except high iso slide film or some special shit); it's basically "you get what you pay for".
Consider you'll be spending some more cash on good devevolping though, and divide the sum by 36.

I guess my logic is only do analog if you want to pay for good film and proper developing,
otherwise it's likely you won't be happy with the results anyway, and also it renders your expensive camera rather useless.

  • The Agfa that's sold in Poundland is C200.

I don't think there's really that much difference in the prices of various films, there's a few really cheap things like Agfa (which is basically just Fuji for cheaper) and some cheap B&W films and everything else is more expensive but not much price variation between manufacturers or lines of film (for the same level of quality), it just depends what you prefer.

Kodak Ektar / Portra, Fuji Pro 400H etc. - they are around €6 here.

It's around 50% more here, at least everywhere I know... :(
(actually Ektar is around the same and really cheap compared to everything else)

  • Cheap film is often disappointing. If you get a great shot that's let down by the quality of the film you'll regret it.
Always worth the extra, the difference is a single pint.

  • Pentax 50mm
Like the composition but realise the light is shit no matter what I do in PS.

  • A friend has just given me a load of darkroom equipment. All developing stuff and a Durst M305 enlarger. I have absolutely no idea how to even begin with all this. Think I'll start with trying print from some existing negatives.

  • I think I still have some paper that you could use.

  • It seems to have a load of paper with it, but thanks. Do you know how to use this stuff?

  • I did a short unit on it at uni about 6 years ago - so in theory, yes.

Whittle still does a lot of printing, also google.

  • Yeah got books and will have a look on youtube or something. Got a week off work to mess about with it.

  • have fun!
remember chemicals can go forwards (best to minimise) but not backwards! don't dip the tongs...

  • Does anyone have any hot tips for super budget colour developing? i want to send films in the post and get developed to CD or something electronic.

  • does it need to be good as well, or just cheap? The place off Brick Lane is dead cheap for c41, but results vary

  • just cheap really. I'm not in london, and thought there might be a super cheap online place that was better than snappy snaps.

  • Not sure if you can send it in but asda is £2 per roll, then an extra quid per 4 rolls to put onto a cd.

  • bargains!

  • Inherited Olympus OM 20 with motor wind and additional OM135 lens - worth the time to clean and fit new seals?

Opinions / advice would be welcome - I've only ever used wholly manual SLRs...

  • Not sure if you can send it in but asda is £2 per roll, then an extra quid per 4 rolls to put onto a cd.

    bargains!

It's cheap but don't expect magic on the files. They're scanned at 72dpi, which gives you near enough fuck all to play with. Don't expect it to be of printing quality.

  • Asda and Tesco still do C41 for £2/roll with mini contact sheet and £1 per DVD (for as many films that fit) for scans. Get someone nice there and they'll process 120 roll too, but it won't fit the scanner.

Befriend the people there and they'll tell you when the machine is cleaned, the chemicals have been replaced and the man from Fujifilm has just been to recalibrate the machine.

  • Excellent tips, thanks.

  • Didn't know tesco did it, I guess I have to go a large one?

  • Well I'm off to asda now, will report back.

  • Support your local proper developing™

  • Ah fuck, too late!

    : /

  • Not too late, apparently they don't do it anymore here :/
