  • Really really hope not. First thing they say about it is 'we won't screw it up' so yeah, fingers crossed. They've paid a fuckload though, so they'll want to do something with it, hopefully something inline with what it already is.

  • ..having witnessed how flickr turned to shit I have a hard time keeping my hopes up tbh..

It's a bit tricky these days. I did a great job of convincing myself not to sign up for another year of "pro". I wish I could articulate properly why I'm starting to dislike Flickr, but I think i'll sum it down to the goddamned "like" button mentality. Discussion border line becomes pointless. Same goes for 500px and the majority of other "Photo" sites.
We generally spend a very very short amount of time absorbing an image (research shows in the region of around 3 seconds) which is barely enough time, now it's all digitized combined with easy means of expressing yourself i.e favourite/star/like (don't get me wrong, I don't dislike digital, I shoot mainly that) all patience with "creating" a picture is gone and it's replaced with the equivalent of photo diarrhea online and seeing what sticks.
Fine, I accept that the majority of the population shoots for fun, but what those two trends do in combination is erode any need to savor an image, instead, it feels like it just breeds laziness.

Too much over thinking? Here, have a couple photos...

  • Flickr layout has just gone full retard but now you have 1tb of space and all your photos are available (rather than just last 200). Mixed feelings. . .

I'm really not going to be happy if tumblr goes to shit - it's definitely my favourite site for putting my photos up.

  • So I don't need to go pro to have all my photos available on Flickr? What's the benefit then?

    Seems so.
I guess they're just giving up on pro.
Full res also now available for free users.

  • oh. goes to log in to flickr for first time in ages
wtf they done with the layout?!
and apparently all my images are too small to use for header... because I uploaded them at the old display size. pfft.

  • Not feeling the new flickr at all. Adding type on photos, with a murky gradient behind as well. Nah.

  • Just looked through my old photos, nice to see some old stuff that was hidden by not going pro... I miss my 5D now. I think I've even managed to forget how heavy it was.

  • Can somebody post the link to that Japanese photographers blog please?

Grainy black and whites shot on a GR1, just a long page of them.

  • You want his flickr, or his tumblr?

  • Tumblr please

  • Just kidding - here's both:
    http://lifephotojournal.com/ & https://secure.flickr.com/photos/yamasakiko_ji/
Hasn't uploaded anything for nine months now though, I hope he's alright...

    I feel ya.

There are some serious photographers on there still, but - due to what you descibed & some other reasons - they're going to leave I think.
It's still possible to take your stuff seriously and produce good work of course, but flickr is now more than ever like what McDonald's is for food. So it becomes a bit like casting pearls before swine. The audience changes.
IMO you summed it up pretty good with "goddamned "like" button mentality".
Time to look out for better alternatives maybe.

Or how about the photographer he's a shoddy pastiche of http://www.moriyamadaido.com/english/

Completely agree. Just compare that japanese photographers blog with his flickr

    http://lifephotojournal.com/ vs https://secure.flickr.com/photos/yamasakiko_ji/

On his blog you can look at one photo at a time, and slowly pace yourself down the page. The flickr feels just like a torrent of random b/w photos, even though they're exactly the same. I value the photos on the blog much more, taking a bit of time looking at each one of them.

I guess flickr is better though for general snaps. If I want a quick overview of someones life in pictures, that's a better layout. But for serious photography I just don't think it does the photos justice.

...to be fair, the way a tumblr-blog looks totally depends on the theme being used,
and there is a "fullscreen" option on flickr (that does fuck up my browser though).

  • shoddy pastiche

    Harsh..

The layout on my tumblr is just a constant stream of images. Although I quite like the presentation of my work like that. A lot of the images lack the merit to be presented alone and the amount of content I post would be greatly reduced if I only posted my best stuff. I don't have a facebook but I like to have my blog as a rolling slideshow of what I've been upto, if only for myself to scroll through.

Maybe I should switch to a single image per page?

I'd say no. I'm in the same boat as you, very self limited amount of social media/stimuli online, so as a preferential form of consumption, I get, and prefer your approach. A scrolling story builds context as far as my eyeballs can see. Picture is worth a thousand words blah blah. Bollocks. Thousand wasted words maybe. If someone is spending time looking at your work, they're more likely to build narrative if you help them along. Editing ain't just bustin' out photoshopz yo!
    What's yo blog?

Also, Flickr is doing as those in control are trying to do, which is get back into the game. I.e Yahoo. Meaning the whole platform is moving away from those that consider themselves beyond amateurs. 1TB of data = Slap dem baby pics up on right there, whats that? The kitchen sink? Yeah that too! (A pro is far far more selective and doesn't need that much in the long term)
Just as Instagram lost all those users, whats that? Flickr app has a major overhaul a couple of days after! Let's GO! Now Tumblr. Can't be angry at their UI change. They are a business.
Personally I'm supporting and hoping for this: http://tryghost.org/features.html

  • Thanks for that Chak, just pledged to it, looks interesting...
If Tumblr goes tits up, can move my content across hopefully..
