  • what scanner can I buy (that is preferably not flatbed for space constraints) for around £80 (second hand is fine) almost exclusive to B&W negative scanning?

  • oh and has to be USB none of that SCSI crap

  • the 1st ave one is really good!

  • preferably not flatbed

I'm using one of these at the moment

    Quato Intelliscan 5000

It's supposed to be very good.

Though I'd be really happy to have a flatbed one that I can feed a whole roll of film at a time. It's so tedious.
That, and SilverFast, I alwaysy want to punch somebody in the face while using it.
(Apparently there's no other compatible software for that scanner).

  • ^ especially SilverFast if you're doing a lot.

I've had a Plustek 7300 for some years - some reviews are not brilliant, but it's been good enough for the quality and quantity I do, given a bit of time and patience. I paid £120 for it (new from Jessops!) because it was being replaced by the 7400 at that time - should be available second hand by now?

  • ^ Will have look at both on ebay, anywhere else I can/should look?

  • Forgot to say - my Plustek looks very similar to Tina's Quato - see http://www.filmscanner.info/en/QuatoIntelliScan5000.html

A quick look on ebay didn't yield much: new prices are higher than you want to pay so it might be worth looking at other makes / hunting down reviews until something turns up? It might also be worth following the news on Jessops - if PriceWaterhouse Cooper can't return stock, it might go on sale at clearance prices?
    http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2013/01/jessops-stores-officially-closed-for-good/ etc.

http://www.scandig.com/ carries quite a range of current models, often with reviews, and http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?99590-Plustek-film-scanners mentions several alternatives but none of them look cheap...

edit: -and wblati (http://www.lfgss.com/member3528.html) has sold several scanners amongst other things photographic - a PM might yield a result?

  • Scanned with above scanner.
    Kodak slide film / canon AE-1, 50mm f/1.4 (I think)

  • ^ where can i buy one? I am watching a couple on ebay but nothing special plus anything that is decent (Canon, nikon) is mad expensive

  • *I would not recommend that scanner because it only works with SilverFast
and besides, I'd rather buy a flatbed one for more convenience & more options.
    *
Take a look at something like an Epson Perfection 4990.

  • Vuescan works with the plustek: http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/plustek_opticfilm_7300.html

    Better than Silverfast IMO

  • I have that exact scanner at work (Epson) but dont have the adapter that holds the negatives also if Silverfast is just a software I think I can deal with it besides wont it work with apple image capture?

  • No it won't work with 'apple image capture'.
As I said using SilverFast makes me want to punch people in the face, but maybe it's super for you.
Try it out I'd say, but please don't come back complaining afterwards ;-]

You can get the film holders for that Epson for small money on eBay by the way.

  • This isn't helping you find one...
Scanned with the Plustek above at 2364x1640 for my own records, 800x600 for the web, in front of the TV so there's something to look at while SilverFast does it's thing. It's not how well it works, it's the time it takes that I find most irritating. Maybe I'm easily irritated?

    FP4, Microphen, Canon FTb, 50mm f/1.8

  • I couldnt find the exact negative holding tray/adapter, its Epson Perfection 3200 scanner

  • ok reading on DIY film holders, If I manage to buy/make that cheap that scanner is virtually mine, my work almost threw it out but I am holding on to it. It's a flat bed and it works with apple image capture.

  • Not sure if this is of interest to anyone, cheap negative scanner:

    http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/maplin-5mp-compact-film-slide-scanner-14-99-delivered-pickup-from-store-1447634

For £15, it might be worth it

  • the sample scans from that are truly shit. even worse than you'd expect.

  • ok reading on DIY film holders, If I manage to buy/make that cheap that scanner is virtually mine, my work almost threw it out but I am holding on to it. It's a flat bed and it works with apple image capture.

I've used one of those I think, surprisingly good. Tend to find flatbeds struggle with any negatives that are a little 'difficult', pushed/grainy etc.

  • A score more than you wanted to pay and flatbed but food for thought perhaps?

    http://marketplace.theprintspace.co.uk/MarketPlace/Market/Details/2310

  • You sure? I had a flatbed scanner, it was utter shit. I know you can get good results, but it seems like so much fiddling to get it it's not worth it. I'd keep saving and get a CoolScan IV on ebay for 250

  • should I pull trigger on that flatbed? I have negotiated £80 on collection? Remember I am new to film, I will be developing film at home, I have exposed 2 rolls so far and gathering things to start home dev, yet to develop and 99% B&W as I want to stay independent of going to any shop for developing and scanning.

Or should I wait for a dedicated film scanner on ebay?

    flatbed pros:

    1. cheap
    2. Not that I would, but can be used to scan other things

    Flatbed cons:

    1. Quality (?! not sure)
    2. size

    dedicated film scanner pros:

    1. Quality
    2. Size

    dedicated film scanner expensive:

    1. expensive especially a good one
  • I don't know your financial situation, but I'd wait for a dedicated film scanner. I spent monies on flatbeds and always regretted it. It's buy cheap, buy twice, at least for me.

Or get it for 80 as an intermediate solution that'll sort you out until you can afford a proper scanner, then sell if for hopefully close to or even 80. You might like it enough to keep it, if not, hopefully just hassle rather than money wasted.

  • ^ I totally agree, I dont like to buy cheap buy twice. But since I am just starting I guess I should opt for a cheaper option for some time and then see how it goes. I can always sell it for a £10/20 loss later. I read the reviews and it's a decent scanner and comparable to V500.
