  • That portrait is lovely.

Was going to say the exact same thing.

  • Thank you all, as for the wall paper it was in my other half's rented house and has slowly grown on me.

  • Another vote for the lovely portrait.

  • Just bought 15 rolls of portra 160, 10 35mm and 5 120 in readiness for my trip to Hawaii next month
7 day shop seemed to be cheapest and have ordered plenty took them before

  • I'm having a bit of a dilemma. I've been using my Mamiya c3 a lot more, however the cost per shot is far greater than 35mm. So for the first time I got my local photo shop to scan the negs to disc. I wasn't that impressed with the result. The jpegs seem flat and pixelated especially (Image 1)
What I used to do was hand scan a print to tiff then convert to jpeg (Image 2), which i think gives much better results. (The scanner was nothing special, £100 or so). I am i being anal, or can you tell the difference (I've tried to select images with similar lighting)?

So can anyone recommend a better lab or reasonably priced scanner? I live in birmingham.

  • I like the look of image two slightly better, a bit punchier or something? I'll leave it to the more experienced to go into the details but I would say it's hard to pick out whether one is better than tother on different images.

  • also shot 1 seems hella dusty for a dev+scan?

  • I used to get the film developed and scanned, used the scans almost as a contact sheet and scanned the keepers myself.

The scans I used to get from the minilab are generally grainy because of all the automatic settings, plus have moire or interpolation (I think that's the right word?) to sharpen details or create the illusion of higher resolution. They also have way less of a dynamic range because the machine does similar to an "Auto Levels" and "Auto Colour" in Photoshop and crushes the blacks and blows out the highlights.

Jessops used to be the absolute worst, there's a department of Cambridge University called PandIS which was slightly better.

  • newbie on this here site, nice to see there's a community of film users! Just got rid of an M6 to go full time with an XA2, think I might be mental but the XA2 is less of a pain in arse to use and I'm not terrified I'll get it nicked/drop it/go arse over tit on bike and smash it to bits in my bag every time I go out.

  • Bold move!

  • great move!

  • Xa2 is a fun little camera and great for day shots, not so good in overcast/dim conditions. I'd recommend putting some 400-800 in it this time of year.

  • The intense regret I first felt has been lifted since I've devd some stuff and scanned it, albeit only with quid shop c41 stuff. Got some hp5 i'm pushing to 800 in it at the minute, see how the meter copes with that. Not anywhere near as versatile as the M6 but I was basically trying to find a camera to do everything I want in one package, come to realise that doesn't exist. Although the mamiya 7 comes pretty damn close! Will post some shots up on here when I'm done.

  • Trying to clear out my camera cupboard:

Zenit-B - Full manual control, M42 fitment. Tested and works (got some test shots somewhere if anyone's interested).
Zenit-E - As above, but with a light meter - untested but as far as I can tell, it's fine.
Both £10 posted each - most of which is the postage

One full leather case and one bottom-half leather case for the above - free with either camera.

Helios-44 lens M42 to fit above, for some reason I've removed the screws that hold the focusing ring on - it still works but you've got to grasp the body itself, or maybe you can replace the screws. Focusing and aperture are a bit stiff - blades have a weird brown-purple colour on the edges (rust perhaps). Free with either camera.

I've also got one of those really cheap nasty point-and-shoot panoramic 35mm cameras from the mid 90s. £3 to cover postage. Might be fun if you're into lomography.

  • Olympus om-20 w/ 50mm zuiko anyone?

  • ^ is it full manual or aperture priority? Also can you do multiple exposures on it?

  • Full manual and aperture priority. Just realized that there's a slight problem with the viewfinder (part of the border has fallen into the frame) it doesn't affect the photos but should be reflected in the price - which means it probably isn't worth my while selling.

  • You should get a score if the lens is a f1.8 and in good condition. More for an f1.4.

  • it's f1.8 - I'm pretty skint but it seems silly to let it go for £20.

  • How intrusive is the broken viewfinder?

  • Bought myself a little project. Needs a really good clean, hoping to learn a bit about disassembly/cleaning. First generation Super Ikonta I believe.

  • 3rd time lucky.
@lae, should be fixable too, I imagine.

  • Yeah I'm pretty good with mechanical stuff so I'll give it a go, I've taken one of my Zenits apart and got it back together okay, at least. If you come up with a price, send me a PM - it'll need posting too since I live in Coventry.

  • I'll have a look to see if its possible for it to be redeemed, but if not, I'll send it to you. No problem.

By the way, GA2G is in capitals because its an abbreviation of 2 place names, from the country of which I am very proud, and originate from. If its too long, then GA will be fine and dandy also.

Sorry for delay! Didn't mean to offend, think I was on phone browser and capitals are a bit of a PITA to manage on that (also auto correct doesn't' like capitalisation for some reason).
Where are you from then? I'm intrigued now :)
    And still have the lens?
