  • Selling my Epson 4490 on the other thread if you guys are interested? Great for film work and will save you a bunch when getting your film processed.

  • What size does it scan stuff in at?
    What Dpi?
    How much

  • £80 delivered.

    50 - 6400, 9600, 12800 dpi

You can specify the scan size. I've blown 35mm up to A2 and it was still very clear. I'd imagine you can go bigger.

    More information is here;

  • Why'd you have to sell it just before christmas eh? I can't afford it now!

  • Go on mate! Treat yourself for Christmas!

  • Took my Hasselblad on a 2 month cycle tour this summer and finally processed films this month. Cahttp://www.flickr.com/photos/theostanton/sets/72157628043841075/with/6360499299. Only a Blad could take full blows from 2 crashes and not get a scratch.

Every single one is lush! Top work. What film were you using for those?

  • Thanks, Porta 400, Provia 400, Velvia 100 (Llyn Brenig + just realised peak district photos weren't taken in Peak District, must have been in Wales somewhere), Reala 100 (Snowdon), Ektar 100 and Neopan 400 (b&w, sand ones taken on mushrooms). Should really mark it on flickr. Glad you like them, was a really fun cycle.

  • Go on mate! Treat yourself for Christmas!

Really I would, but I indulged quite a lot at the end of summer... if you've still got it in mid-January, give me a PM.

  • Hello, I'm just wondering whats the best film to use at this time in the year?
    Thank you.

  • Oh yeah it's 35mm that I'm looking for.

  • Hello, I'm just wondering whats the best film to use at this time in the year?
    Thank you.

    to use for what?

  • Mostly night shots, but sometimes it would be used in the daylight.

  • If those night shots are with flash then 100iso will be fine. Pick up some rolls of 400iso for indoor (natural light) and dull days.

Trawling flickr helps a bit if you want to see what different emulsions do in different circumstances but someone else may have a link for comparisons.

I hope this answer is not too basic.

  • ^ as said, flickr is a great resource to check films, usually you even find it used in a certain camera.

I'm totally sold on ilford hp5 at the mo, but it depends on what you're after. Just don't get any cheap shit, your photos will suffer

  • i was always pleased with hp5 and fp4

  • Oh okay thanks for the information! I've got a Flickr account. All my shots have been taken with the Fujicolour C200 what do you think of the C200? Will I notice a huge difference if i change?

  • give it a try

  • Fujicolour C200 is alright IMO. If you buy in bulk you can get better film just as cheap.

I use a lot of Fuji Superia Reala 100 and Velvia 100F and some Fuji Extra 800 too. I'm sure there are better films out there but I'd rather keep it cheap and use more rolls. Agfa Precisa 100 is ace and cheap.

  • Does anyone know anything about modern 35mm slide scanners available on the market atm?

Plustek 7600i AI Optic Film: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories
Plustek 7600i SE Optic Film Scanner: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories
    Reflecta ProScan 7200 - Film/Slide Scanner: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

After realizing I'm going to need to long term slide scanning solution I figured I best invest.

    Anyone got any pointers?

did you get any answers to this?

  • Oh okay thanks for the information! I've got a Flickr account. All my shots have been taken with the Fujicolour C200 what do you think of the C200? Will I notice a huge difference if i change?

well if you change to hp5 or fp4 you will as they're both black and white films...

I use a lot of Fuji Superia 200, it's fairly cheap from 7dayshop. supposedly it has better colour and less grain than the C200.

I use quite a lot of Fuji Reala too when I can find it at a decent price.

getting pricier, Kodak Portra 160 and 400NC were very nice with slightly warm natural tones, haven't used the new version yet though. didn't really get on with the Fuji equivalent (I think it is) Pro 160S and 400H as I found it difficult to get the colours right, always too cold/green.

you just have to try things out - I've never got on with higher speed colour film (other people get good results from Superia 400 and 800), but rather like the visible grain and contrast of higher speed b&w, for example.

also, I've entirely given up on using slide film as I'm just not good enough at exposing correctly.

I agree about the cooler colours of Fuji 400H Pro. I don't mind it though, you can rate it at 800 or 1600 no problem and still get great results.

The Superia 800 is basically the same as 800 Extra AFAIK. I only really use it if I'm changing colours to black & white. It's pretty grainy as you'd imagine but that too can be interesting.

  • oh, yeah I still have a small stock of Portra 400NC as it's the high-speed colour film I do like.

eh? why not use a b&w film and be able to do enlargements? is it just for convenience? and do you actually get decent contrast? do you have to do lots of digital post-processing?
