  • Hi all! An old friend and I have the same Nikon FE from our days in architectural school. This was in the 90s... I got mine first, following his recommendations. At the time, he was already equipped with a more modern Nikon model. Then a couple years later I found another FE in a flea market for cheap; there were couple of things wrong with it, don't remember what exactly, but it wasn't a big deal. I gave it to my friend, who had it repaired by some local highly recommended guru.
The last time I used mine was probably around 2007 when I climbed the Mont Blanc with my dad.
My friend just recently tried to use his again. But new batteries just die in no time, about 24 hours! (I'm comparison mine still work after over 15 years).
The guru mentioned earlier is probably retired, and this was in France anyway, in the middle of nowhere; we both live in London now.
Any idea what the problem could be? And if this wasn't an easy fix, any recommended London based repair places?
(This is mine, I should start using it too...h

  • Pretty sure it'll have been through an x-ray at some point.

  • A thread on the issue here mate. I used to own a Nikon FM that would do this every now and again, I never got it fixed tho.

  • Thank you! I've passed on the link.

At least on the FM you can get by, kind of, with an FE you're left with M90 only...

  • Speak to PPP Reapirs he can maybe have a look at it.

  • Thanks for this, he's sent them an email.

  • +1 for PPP. CLAed my M3 and repaired a Pen F that wasn't firing. Nice and quick, and not charging extortionate rates!

  • Found this roll of film in a draw today. Expired on December 1st so not too long ago..... Will I need to shoot it at any other iso speeds to compensate or is it still ok to shoot at the recommended due to it not being out of date long?

  • He really just seems like he loves it and is charging fair money, I’ll support businesses like that hand over fist!

  • Should be fine, I've shot a load of that stuff out of date. Can always expose +1 to be safe.

  • We’re not your girlfriend, it’s never accidental 😅😉

  • Nice camera, welcome to an unheard of faff factor!

  • Just like our (only) child!

  • Its great fun, never used a large format before; before i splash out on 4x5 dev i am going to shoot on a 6x9 back it came with.

Came with another lens; 150mm 5.6, in this nice suitcase.

  • Unlike b&w process film XP2 loves light. Expose it like colour film (metering for the shadows) and it’ll work great.

A couple of months out of day is not a problem. Best if it’s stored cold of course.

  • proper good

  • From the experience of repairing the light meter in my FE, google is your friend to see if there is someone has had a similar problem. Cost of getting the camera repaired will be much more than getting another working one.

    EDIT: Bit late.

  • XP2 a fav film but when printed on colour paper, the image is comes out sepia toned unless corrected.

  • SLR film camera bodies, are they worth selling bare?

Have bought a canon EOS5000, mainly for the lens to fit to my 350d. Is it worth anything without a battery. Tested with a battery and it works, and meters correctly.
