  • Which is fucking annoying when you get back from a holiday and you've shot shit loads on it.

I got given a camera as a present for my birthday whilst on holiday and shot shit loads on it. No doubt light leaks galore when I get the negs/scans back... fingers crossed.

  • Anyone want an Ai 28mm 2.8 Nikkor? Not sure how much they cost in the U.K... but I paid the equivalent of £113 at today’s exchange rate. Happy to take it back for a full refund, which I can do, but if that sounds like a good deal then I can bring it back to the U.K. in a couple of weeks. Has the original box and is a 9/10 condition externally and dust, haze, fungus free internally. Barrel is still very, very smooth.

  • That Benz pic up there is really nice.

Ricoh AF5 and Kodak ColorPlus 200

  • Are those the ones you metered with your phone ? Pretty good apart from the Camden Market (?) one that looks a tad under exposed

  • Yeah they all came out fine, more or less

  • Love the colours, second pic is great

  • Also like both of those, really nice

  • Got a Voigtlander Vito II for my birthday whilst on hols and love it, perhaps one of my favourite cameras

First two Delta 400 pushed to 800, second two Ultramax. Really pleased with the Delta shots in particular, not shot with that film before. Has a really nice tonal range

  • Might be a stupid question but can all flashes be used on all hotshoes? I want a tiny flash for my 35mm slrs (pentax+canon). Something to leave in a pocket/bag for after dark.
Anyone want to sell me something?

  • I'm still finding my way with flashes, but in theory any non-ttl flash should work on your Pentax and Canon SLRs ? I'm sure someone with a bit more experience will be along in a bit.

What do you want to use it for ? If just a party flash then it may be cheaper to get a body with a pop up flash - the Pentax ZX5/MZ5 is cheap and will take your K mount lenses.
Otherwise if you want to be able to bounce it, flashes tend to be a bit bigger

  • Love the look of hotshoe flashes and proper lenses. Compacts are great but the flash photos are never amazing like they are with a flash on an SLR.

Not so much for parties, just being able to use my SLRs after it goes dark without resorting to 800-3200 film and fast lenses

  • can all flashes be used on all hotshoes?

short answer: yes - at least in the really basic way: set flash sync speed on the camera body, and it will trigger the flash when you press the shutter, you sort-of adjust the exposure by setting the power of the flash in relation to available light and the f-stop you're using and your film's ISO. In real life it's very much an Arthur Fellig approach.
When you want the more fancy stuff things are getting much more complicated (and expensive) quickly.

Compacts are great but the flash photos are never amazing like they are with a flash on an SLR.

I think if you use a tiny one (read: low-ish power, shooting straight ahead, no tilting / bouncing etc.) then the results do look kinda close to what a compact gives you actually.
For me at least the big change was when I got a proper powerful (read: big) flash, and also with bouncing the light.

This is the answer i was looking for, thanks. With this iso and film speed are set, so its only worrying about aperture. I shot a whole roll in the snow with a flash on the A1 guessing the aperture and it all came out fine so i would rate myself to be competent enough.

I understand the benefits of bouncing but I'll try a small flash for now just to see how I get on with it. Wycameras have a T20 for a tenner which seems to be one of the smallest

Fix your settings before you leave the house and be in the right place at the right time?

There's always tripods, depends on what your shooting ?

Bought a Gorlliapod for the Voigtlander Vito II and works well as long as you've got something to attach it too.

  • T20 for a tenner

Sounds good, I'd get that and just shoot with it for a while.

    Haha, yea.
I was thinking of his "f/8 and be there" approach as that's basically how I ended up using flash with my analog SLRs, in a way.
Of course one can use flash in a much more sophisticated manner, but for what I wanted this worked well. Thank god negative film is so forgiving when it comes to blowing highlights

  • Mostly pics of my mates. Not the kind of thing I want to lug tripods around for. For long exposures i would probably just wedge the camera against a rock/wall or something.

I like using SLRs over compacts during the day if I have the ability to lug one around (M body pentax and 40mm 2.8 is just a glorified manual focusing compact really), but annoying that it basically becomes useless past the afternoon

  • Yeah given that you can get useable images 6-7 stops over exposed with certain stocks im not sure I need to use a lightmeter with my GW690
