Does anyone roll their own film here?
And has anyone shot Ilford Pan 400, it’s not generally available here but ive found a shop selling it in both 36 frame rolls and bulk rolls.
Hoping to get into developing and probably bulk rolling my own film this next few months, possibly printing if I can figure out a darkroom space (or find a community one in Manchester)

Yes, it's easy and cheap. I have used a few 30m rolls of HP5 and it works out around half the price of buying 36 shot rolls.

I looked into bulk loading a while back. You CAN save money, but not much, DX coded re-spoolable canisters are more pricey, and you can risk losing money if you fuck it up and accidentally exposing a whole roll/the bulk roll
Edit: mi7rennie knows more than me. If he says its worth it it probably is. Just not for me atm :) -

Yeah I've taken some of my favourite photos on it in the past, but bought a pack of 10 all in date and mostly stored in fridge but just seems a lot more hit a miss. Cant say I use it enough anymore to compare but have taken some lovely shots on Acros but its a lot more forgiving. p.s thats a sharp selfie for a plasticky camera!

I recently started. I put HP5 into any old used metal canisters (paying attention to DX code if using auto cameras). I leave about 20mm of the old film attached to the case spool and just tape on the fresh stuff.
Kentmere 400 in bulk roll is cheap and not bad at all.
I think there is something to be said for sticking with one film type when doing home dev. Bulk loading suites that.

These are great. The colours are fantastic. Like ektar without exposure related casts.
Interested to know what kits or processes you’ve found good for vision 3.

know as the 'rusty laptop'
Ha. Never heard it called that but I'll think of it now.

Wouldnt really say acros and colorplus are comparable. Film results are dependent on too many factors to begin with. And the right composition on shit film is still better than shit composition on good film (and other cliches)

Yeah my plan was to just go to a place that develops and just ask them for a bunch of random canisters and sort them into ISOs for DX codes and then only use ones with the intended DX in point and shoots but whatever I want in another 35mm
The risk of exposing the whole roll I would guess is fairly low anyway.
@miro_o @mi7rennie how difficult would it be to do it inside a dark bag to reduce any potential film wastage?
And what loaders do you use? Is there any reason not to just get the £30ish unbranded ones?

• #19064
Unless you dev yourself how are you planning to get the canisters back?
-
• #19065
All labs I know happily give you as much empty canisters as you want.

Just got back from Barcelona where I played with shooting skateboarding on film. Jesus, it's hard. Everyone recommended Portra 400, so that's what I got, but because it was always sunny and the film is so sensitive, I always had to keep the aperture closed almost all the way which ruined the depth of field. And I still need to learn a lot about correct exposure - some of the shots are either too dark, or don't have enough contrast. In hindsight, I think I should've got the Portra 160 and open the aperture a bit more.

Not a bad attempt! The hippy jump over the tree is nice. Shooting skating is hard, especially without flash as you'll need your shutter speed at 1/1000 at least.
First things I ever shot on film were skateboarding, and main thing I learned was you need a really strong composition to show the trick well, and that you'll burn through A LOT of film. There's a photo (maybe video) somewhere of Atiba Jefferson sat at the bottom of a handrail in a pile of maybe 50 rolls of film, all of them pulled out and wasted because they weren't a make

Thanks! The hippy jump made it all worth it, I might even get it printed. And yes, I didn't use flash, I still need to figure out how to use it properly.

And another. I didn't even have flash triggers back then, these are both with 30m+ of sync cables trailing all over the place. I was no-ones friend that day.

Ooh that's pretty!

Those are all bloody great. Shallow depth of field is overrated anyway and what you ended up with honestly looks better.

Such a good set, love these! Hippy jump is perfect.

Strong last few pages, loving the skateboard shots!

You could easily shoot portra 400 at 100. Only two stops overexposed which is well within its latitude. Either way I wouldn't worry, lovely shots!
A lot of nice stuff lately.
