Well the Evan's at Canary Wharf seem pretty nice... Last time I was there, I went to buy a pedal spanner... instead one of the guys there just removed the pedals for me, no cost.
I'm sure it differs per branch though...

you see really, he was just being cunning, because next time you'll have to go back there again because you still don't have a pedal spanner. they're like banks offering students free railcards to open an account, ten years later they owe them £250k for a broom cupboard in london fields.

the sad thing is +imMe they probably don't give a shit, because they know they aren't relying on returning business.
still no respond from them about jobs?

After I got knocked off my bike and needed to make a claim I went to the first 2 bike shops I passed on the way home - Cyclopedia and Putney Cycles.
Both were more than willing to give me quotes (though they did ask that if I were to replace the damaged bits that I buy something from them).
Sometime in the future I will more than likely buy stuff from both of those shops.

They have 4 days left to get back to me, then I'm going round more bike shops.

bike shops do not have to lend their tools to you, depending on the shop a damaged tool may come out of the mechanics pay. Do I trust most people out there with my Park Bros £30 chain breaking tool?? HELL NO
No offence, but I did a check point for an alley cat a few years back where you had to break and then fix your chain before going on... this was a courier only alley cat. I had brought an extra length of chain just incase and 2 tools.
I was shocked by how many working couriers (who should in my opinion be able to do most basic repairs themselves because its related to their job) could not do this.
More than a few had to have a quick word about it with me, as they were nervous of wrecking their chain. One actually broke my tool. (not the park one)True story.
Don't give the bike shop greif or call them bad names if they don't let you use their tools. I admit to having been denied tools when in need as well and it is annoying.. VERY ANNOYING but the reality is that mechanic has no reason to believe that you know anything about the proper use of the tool.

sure but we are talking about Evans here. Lots of their stores have a toolbox behind the counter.

jacqui, theres a bike shop in croydon called bike plus, its helpful, friendly and its prices are competitive unlike any evans shop

Plus it IS Croydon, I'm not entirely surprise they didn't lend you the tools.

Evans in Chiswick have been/are always very helpful.

I've got nothing but good things to say about evans.
This will change dramatically if they choose not to employ me though.

Usually I offer those in need of work a chance to clean my bikes.. unfortunately I have cleaned two, yes, count them, two of my bikes in the last couple of days.
An unprecedented cleaning frenzy on my behalf that has subsequently rendered your skills of no use to me. -

I've cleaned it twice at least since the canal stint. Glad I didn't take it out today.. fuck me it was wet this morning! There was another creek crossing on the ride this morning. Good to see those rich Cayenne driving cunts west of London pay to maintain the roads they fuck..

I went into Evans and whilst looking for some bits and bobs, I saw that their sale is well on, but was admitted to by staff, that prices had gone up significantly on many other things. Tyres and tubes especially look more expensive.
Exactly.
When I worked at Evans we never had a set policy regarding this.
I used to mainly do quotes for damage which involved taking in the customers bike, bringing it down the stairs, pushing the mechanics out of the way and assessing the cost.
Then I would type and print, address and envelope the quote. Wait for customers return and carry the bike back up the stairs.
From a person/space management perspective these costs have to be factored. Having an employee running about doing that and the storage of a damaged bike in a tight inner-city storage area. The bike in most cases is unridable which gives less incentive for a prompt pick up.
Stolen bikes are another matter but still require a good wedge of time for a bike shop employee and cannot be done straight away in most cases.
Ask hael about my quote-delux sometime.
