  • hold on hold on. is this rear/front tyre thing an hilarious joke for new people? i've never noticed tyres to be sold as front and rear?

  • nope. if you look on most tyres they have a directional arrow embossed on the sidewall that indicates if they are a front (arrow forwards) or rear (arrow backwards). it's pretty much a standard across manufacturers but some may just have it printed instead.

  • Not at all. Continental even went as far as admitting the anomaly, but then tried to disguise the inferiority of their rear tyres by marketing them as having 'superior power transmission'. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?PartnerID=79&ModelID=18792

  • Sound like the staff at Evans do know what they're talking about.

It also sound like you were talking to me, as I do tend to sell Armadillos to roadie who want a decent tyres that offer some kind of protection.

    With fitting?

  • haha, superior power transmission is exactly what i'm looking for!

  • But it's purely marketing bullshit from Continental. Of course the tyre on the rear wheel has 'superior power transfer' - it's the one connected to your legs via the cogs/chain/cranks/pedals. The front wheel just has to spin freely.

Don't be fooled by that kind of crap.

  • no no, BMMF, i was joking. :)

  • serious question:

how much slower will puncture proof tyres make me?

  • Serious question: How much do you like fixing p's?

  • if you average out the time otherwise spent fixing punctures with the added journey time you'd probably break even over the life of the tyre.

  • There is no such thing as puncture proof tyres (unless you mean those solid rubber things that ride like someone has stuck lengths of hose pipe to your rims?)

  • With fitting?

For £13.95, you can watch me fit tyres on your wheels.

I'd paid more than that to watch you fit a pair of Vittoria Randonneurs. :P

a puncture proof tyres might slow you down if you gain a couple stones after purchasing said tyres.

*no touching allowed and there's a 2 drink minimum at the bar.

  • Don't forget to take your old tyres in for exchange. I think Evans allow 10% off the retail for the old ones.

  • I think you're better off going to CycleSurgery as they repair your old tyre providing that you did buy one from them.

Worth it I suppose, it does extend the life of your tyre.

    Tru dat.

The front is claimed to have better steering performance. Which all down to clever rubber compounds.

Nothing to do with being directly atached to the handlebars conti cnuts?

  • serious question:

how much slower will puncture proof tyres make me?

Just think about what you have asked for a minute.

Do you really think anyone here will be able to answer that properly?

Without the relevant scientific information required to establish the "slower" and "you" bits, we can only guess.

I'm going to hazard a guess that you are not racing, but commuting. In which case "slower" or "faster" is largely irrelevant when it comes to tyres.

Instead of asking vague questions on internet forums I suggest you do some research yourself and with the information you glean from this, make an informed decision for yourself.

    +1

But then you can only do this by post, and they charge for disposal of your old valve caps.
    Rip off Britain.

    Mine virtually are.

The downside being that they are less smooth than simply riding a punctured tyre/bare rims.
