Anti-Puncture Tyres At-a-glance

  • Hardshell and a normal gator bought!

  • been hacking about on schwalbe duranos for a week or two, treated myself to some vittoria open corsas with some butyl toobes.

its like ive been running in clogs and just got some trainers.

i really hope , reeeeeaaaally hope, that theyll not fall fowl of nasty sharp shit.

once i get a puncture i tend to stay away from that tyre convinced that they are shit no matter what they are, and try something else , even though , in my mind , logically , i know getting punctures are more of a random accident than a definitive thing.

if you know what i mean.

  • I recently put some Conti GP 4000's on my non-skidding bike and am a little underwhelmed. I'll have to see how they wear, but so far I prefer Ultremo's.

  • had ultremos , got puncture , got rid .

    supersticious ?

logic in me reckons punctures is like gambling. but , ill stick with what i trust i suppose. hope these new vittorias just dont get one. cos theyre fuckin lovely.

  • That's not logic.

That's using race tyres and being surprised when they puncture more than commuter tyres.

  • puncture proof or fly up the fuckin hill. yup.

tell me , what is there out there , that will give me both ???????????

youd think with all this modern technology ?

  • i know it's a bit of a pointless photo but this was just under 4 weeks on a gatorskin with 18 patches

  • all depends on the rider, had a standard gatorskin on the rear for around a month and its showing very little wear.

  • puncture proof or fly up the fuckin hill. yup.

Rubino Pro and Durano Pro/Plus/whatever for durability.

I don't care about having the grippiest tyres possible for crit cornering but a lot of ladyboys on here will insist they need race tyres for their xtrem3 riding.

  • Basically I am looking to upgrade the tyres on my ss cycle.

I have seen a few posts of people's bikes with wider/chunkier looking tyres on and think that would suit my riding style.

Where I live is full of kerbs and pot holes. After about 10mi of riding the 700 x 23 tyres I have currently seem a bit feeble. I feel like if I hit too deep a hole, or a speed bump to quick my wheel is going to collapse (tyres are inflated to correct psi so i think that's not the issue).

So what I am wondering (for example) is, would I be able to run a 700 x 32 schwalbe marathon supreme road city on the rims I currently have?

Frame/brake clearance will be fine just wondering about implications with the rim due to the extra width of the tyre.

    Thanks.

  • As always sheldon to the rescue

    http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

scroll down to where it says "width considerations"

At a guess 32c will probably be absolutely fine for you, but at the top of your tyre size range.
    Measure to be certain.

  • cheers fella^
obviously sheldon's article gives some more instruction

  • You probably don't need to go all the way to 32 though. I personally find 28 a nice compromise between speed/weight and comfort/resistance to bumps.

  • ^Agreed

  • Ah, never even thought of checking sheldons to be honest.

Shall nip the wheel off tomorrow and measure the internal width.

Any recommendations on any decent tyres? Not looking to spend a fortune, 15-20 quid a side tops if possible. the cheaper the better.

  • Also taking into consideration it is a city centre I live in and broken glass is rife. I looked like I was drunk riding through the city earlier trying to dodge broken bottles and glasses.

  • You can find loads of tyre info on the forum if you search for it.

I use these and like them:
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/vittoria-randonneur-city-tyre/

  • Shall have a read through those posts. Thanks.

  • eg this thread

    Also this one
    https://www.lfgss.com/thread83414.html

  • I run 25c on rims as wide as 19c, the graphs is more err on the side of caution.

  • This is the modernised version of Sheldon's table:

  • tester and scoble rule.

...........so after 85 miles or so on lovely new vittoria open corsas. pop.

    i hate life.
