  • I am well up for this, if you'll have me

  • yes ma'am used to be a KP ( kitchen porter, main duties taking abuse from head chef and washing dishes ) during university holidays as a kid
i'll bring my own fairy liquid !!

Have you read 'Down and Out in Paris and London'?

  • orwell right ?

  • Yes, brilliant tale, but also the story of his time in Paris as a plonguer and kitchen dogsbody.

  • oh jacqui i just read a moveable feast a couple weeks ago, and it was so enjoyable. some nice classics on your list there, i'd be up for any of them.

mattty - really like your suggestions as i've never read the trial or anything by pynchon.

and of course the very hungry caterpillar is just ace.

  • just got farewell in today's post ;)

  • so has le club reached its membership limit at 6?

  • plongeur
makes being up to your arms in greasy water sound almost palatable !
or maybe something delboy would say to rodney

  • Yes, brilliant tale, but also the story of his time in Paris as a plonguer and kitchen dogsbody.

probably my favourite orwell book, havent read it for years - must revisit:

    my list would be:

Ham on Rye : Charles Bukowski
    Ask the Dust: John Fante
Le Grand Meaulnes - Alan Fournier

  • ham on rye :)

horatio, i don't think there's a limit? get in on it!

  • Clearing my shelves - I found a couple of well-regarded books I have either yet to finish, or I have read them and forgot about it.
The Grand Meaulnes - ALain Fournier
The First Circle - Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Since our list has grown to 9 members - I think we need to decide whether to split into 2 groups, or just stop here and try to accomodate. It will not take long to find a couple more readers and get 2 groups of 5-6.

Personally I am happy to accomodate.

    • I am happy reading ANY book of any genre - is that how this is going to work?
...are people expecting a particular theme?
  • for discussion of books - no limit, however I'd like to limit the food aspect to 6 for both financial and practical reasons.

  • Fair play - so lets give people till friday to confirm / drop out?
Time for a second group methinks!

  • I'm still in. Halfway through Farewell to Arms already.

  • I'm still in. Only on page 6 of Farewell to Arms tho, so I had better get reading I guess.

  • Ask the Dust: John Fante loved it

i may be up for this in the future meetings

  • still in. as nice as the dinner idea definitely is, i would honestly rather lose that than split the group up. but it doesn't look necessary at this point... so that is good!! and i'd also be more than happy to throw in a fiver to the host.

  • Kattt:
    throws fiver
    "Dance bitch!"

  • hi there! jacqui aquired me to peel the potates, so i will better get reading! and looking forward to meet you all there. wolf

  • Nice - I'm on page 30.
    Prav

  • excellent i'm on page 120 and loving it, where and when are we doing this again?
i can bring my new speciality, home made onion bhajis

  • Kattt:
    throws fiver at Prav
    "Dance bitch!"

    wouldn't be the first time.

  • Finished it this morning. Not quite what I was expecting....anyway...I'll save it for the discussion

  • Are we still on for the 17th?
Or should it be a fri-sat or sunday thing?
Since food isn't the main thing going on and we want to keep the group together why dont we do a pot luck of finger type foods?
Yep I am still in. But i better get reading..damn Geek Love sucked me in.

  • Kattt told me about this thread earlier.

i'm much better at cooking then reading & as all literature is hermetic no discussion will have any true catharsis, but nice food is always mmmm teasty, so i wish to make food and sit on the fence in regard to the reading.
