  • anyone who thinks of London in 'tube zones' quite misguided and i would assume not really from London.

Like central London, Londons borders are not exactly 'clear'. You could define central London a number of ways : by the C-charge area, if a phone number starts with '0207', if the area is in 'zone 1', or whether the particular area is densely populated, distance from Charing Cross, etc.

I would say that anyone in the M25 is in London. In the outer parts, this will include postcodes that do not start with N,NW,W,SW,SE,E.

  • im surprised that your surprised not that theres loads of non-londeners, u been and talked to people out there recently, i hardly ever meet a 'true' londoner ?

  • When you say 'from', you mean born or live here? Born in Liverpool 2.3.76, lived in London since Summer '95

  • Plus, my great Aunt was murdered by Jack the Ripper, that must make me an honorary cockney surely!?

  • well..the demographics of London have changed quite a lot in the last 50 or so years.

a lot of 'true' Londoners (white, working class i assume you mean) left to places like Essex after the second world war, when living conditions were bad and London/the east end became a haven for immigrants from all over the world.

but most people living in London are born and bred. i think around 33% of London were born abroad.

  • I live at the begining of Mile End Rd & I have recently produced a real Cockanee. I like London.

//Edit// For christ sake don't ask Bill how the street numbering system works.

  • Bill - as a controller and former messenger can you tell me how london street numbering works, ta.

  • live in Clapton E5, have fixed and geared, the latter coming out for distances and when Im paranoid about my bike getting jacked

  • oh yeh, lived in

  • no 10,000,000K ride today then?

I rode with Mal to her brothers for a bbq and some tinnies.
    That's what I call training!

May was gonna be another non-drinking month pre-Wessex.
I've been drunk 4 out of 5 days so far. I need help.

  • Greater London is not a city in that it does not have official city status granted by the Crown. This is because one of the London boroughs, Westminster, is officially a city,[4] as well as the City of London itself which would make such a status anomalous. Despite this, Greater London is commonly regarded as a city in the general sense of a municipality. A Lord Lieutenant of Greater London is appointed for its area, less the City of London; an area identical to the Metropolitan Police District; and for the purposes of the Lieutenancies Act 1997 this area is defined as a county.[5]
The term "London" is normally used in reference to Greater London or to the overall conurbation, but not often to the ancient, tiny City of London in east central London. Instead, this small area is often referred to simply as "the City" or "the Square Mile" and it forms the main financial district. Archaically the urbanised area of London was known as the Metropolis. In common usage, the terms 'London' and 'Greater London' are usually used interchangeably.[2] It is officially divided for some purposes, with varying definitions, into Inner London and Outer London. For strategic planning purposes the region is divided into five sub regions.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that, as of 2006, London's foreign-born population is 2,288,000 (31%), up from 1,630,000 in 1997. The 2001 census showed that 27.1% of Greater London's population were born outside the UK, and a slightly higher proportion were classed as non-white.

  • 31% foreign-born. i wonder how many are born in the UK but outside greater london? seems to me that a high proportion of british londoners i meet are originally from all sorts of other places, and have moved to london for study/work.

  • Essex!!! Slllaaaag!!!!

  • Lived in London from age 6 months to a year, so only really rode around on my pram.

Now in Oxford riding fixed and single speed coaster brake

  • I was born in south east dormitory land, grew up abroad, came back a bit for uni, went off again, came back and moved to London because I was finding it difficult to get into the line of work I wanted to abroad. Am here for the foreseeable now, despite my itchy feet.

  • Is there life outside the M25 ?

  • You should all come and live in Brum, it's much simpler.

Oh well, the usual load of twaddle or great banter depending on whatever mood I am in. I'm talking about the entire thread!!

A minor point about producing a real Cockney child. Unless the wind was very strong you won't hear The Great Bell of Bow which is the marker for being a Cockney. You need to have been born within the sound of that and unless your progeny was born at Barts then they are not a Cockney. Loads of people get that fact mixed up and think that being born near Bow E3 is the qualifier.

By the way I was not born in London but having lived here for 48 years I reckon that makes me more of a Londoner than most on the forum. Not even living in N21 can really disqualify me.

  • It's all about the low SW's, baby?!
    Me: SW1, W11 (late 80's boho/r'n'r madness). SW3, SW2...
Born and bred, you're all a buncha fuckin' 'blow ins', pffffffffffff... ;)

  • Plus, my great Aunt was murdered by Jack the Ripper, that must make me an honorary cockney surely!?

Really? Awesome. Any more info? My lady loves ripper-history. We live on the tour route right now.

And yeah, 'proper Londoners' were born here. ;)

    :D

  • There was me thinkging that The Royal London would be close enough to Cheapside to be able to hear them. 1.5 miles.....maybe with a little wind.

On second thoughts I dunno why I'm trying so hard to qualify my offspring as a cockney

  • Chim-Chiminee-Chim-Chimenee-Chim-Chim-Chim-Cheroo... I should really go to bed... ;)

  • also born here, lived in SW1, NW1, NW3, N7, NW9.

    north london baby!

I do believe that most streets count away from charings X, and some count up on one side of the street and down on the other, the latter is long, old streets.
