  • all art is the meaningless expression of the ego of the artist. it should be judged by aesthetics, alone, and not any perceived "message".

In general; yes, but all viewers are inherently subjective. Therefore messages are found and either consciously or subconsciously help determine "worth".

if the artist really had something important to say they would write a polemic

Ah, no. Art has the ability to transcend written and aural language. [but, refer to subjectivity via culture - see those lame HSBC ads]. Art allows apologia to write.

  • i'm up for it, where/when?

    tomorow? some where?

  • A metaphorical function. hehe. yeah.

yes. as in not a practical function. as in the way an object, or artwork if you prefer, may operate on the viewer in a certain way or vice versa.
    edit
perhaps you prefer 'operate' in place of function?

  • tomorow? some where?

heh ok. i get out of work at half 6 tomorrow. i work central and live north... do you know the faltering fulback?

  • how about that studenty pub just off tottenham Court Road

  • heh ok. i get out of work at half 6 tomorrow. i work central and live north... do you know the faltering fulback?

no, but i could meet you at the shop at around 6.15ish

  • that yellow card place?

  • yeah, just come to the shop round 6 ish, we'll pick a place from there.

  • yes. as in not a practical function. as in the way an object, or artwork if you prefer, may operate on the viewer in a certain way or vice versa.

That would be neither metaphor nor function within this debate.

  • what debate? you haven't been making a point since your first or second post. i've been trying to address your issues and you're just trying to pick the smallest holes in each statement. it's going in cirles.
    i'm done.

    see you at 6-ish chris?

  • talking of Dondi, I used to know "A-One" quite well....great bloke, good fun...sadly now dead.

Right, you changed my mind on that one, such a convincing case made.

  • there are few more futile pursuits than trying to define "art". art is lots of things, some of them contradictory. experience it, interpret it, criticise it... whatever you want, but arguing over what it is or isn't is just bullshit semantics.

i like banksy, i reckon he's a funny cunt, with a good eye for political satire.

  • what a shame

    i liked banksy :(

    • 1 On Westwood Being A Cock

    Speakers on FIRE!

    nah, i don't think so.

  • want to join the pub debate tomorrow?

  • yeah actually, if work allows.

  • Banksy is not a person - Banksy is in fact a collective of 3, who all have regular jobs in the real world, 2 of whom are public schoolboys, who met at Bristol University - hence why you will never get a picture of Banksy

  • the Ted Baker of graffiti? I must say their "brand" is doing pretty well, they've really sold themselves well and loads of people have bought into the myth..they must be well minted innit?

  • Art puts food on the table.

  • Art puts food on the table.

No, fuck that, only starving artists are real artists!

  • I'm a little bitter as I didn't buy the 'Spot the Ball' canvas in 1999 from a little record shop in Bristol for 90 quid. I didn't cause I didn't really like it but was somehow tempted.
Wish I had as the drum and bass 12"s really arent going to buy me a house.

  • FUCK.

I got an original banksy I brought for £75 in 2003, it now worth £5,000.

Should've sold it when I have the chance.

  • westwood has an amazing knowledge of a genre of music which i love. he's seen so much change in it and still managed to remain part of it. perhaps that reflects the sad direction that hiphop has gone in more recent years. i would love to sit down and chat with the guy about it. however, i do hang my head in shame by association when i have the misfortune to hear him on the radio nowadays. but esentially, i'll always have respect for him for his role in the industry, and more importantly, being the one person who totally changed my mind and direction and opened my eyes to what music could really be and how i could mean so much.. im not getting into a debate about hiphop bein or not being music. thanks.

so yeah, fuck westwood on the radio nowadays, but not back in the day.

    as you were.

whatfriends, big dog pitbull status ya heard.

    (insert noises here)
