^^^+1 on that!
And yes, those plastic fag cups can be a nightmare if worn...often had successful results with a big pair of gas pliers though

Thanks!
Managed to get the non-drive side off with a standard Campy BB tool.
The drive side won't budge and I don't want to ruin it.
Even though the cups are plastic rubbish the sealed bearing seam alright.
I'll borrow Retro di Corsa's Tacx tool in the next few days.

How much do they cost??

i've recently purchased a french campagnolo BB for a gitane track frame and i'm now trying to find a decent tool to attached the thing. needing help in locating the right tool? can anyone point me in the direction of someone who might make such a tool.
because of the french threading the BB has been know to unwind itself so i'm really needing to buy the tool so i can tighten occassionally.
online sales prefered as i'm now living in sydney. many thanks for the help, in advance.

if you have a picture of the bb cups, then someone will be easily be able to recommend you the right tool
-
• #57
Right I'm thread jacking, instead of starting a whole new one.
..and this is probably a stupid question, but I've just bought a "new (probably in the 80's) Shimano 105 square taper bottom bracket" for £15.
- Have I been ripped off, is it shit? (I think its worth about £7)
- What tool do I need to fit it, because it is not like my last one...
I'm trying to add pictures...

By the looks of it you need one of these;
and one of these;

Right, I understand how that would work on the piece in the right of the last picture...
but it seems like I would only need one.however, and this is where i will embarrass myself as i have never used worked on a BB before, on the other one the ring comes of and just leave a threaded outside with 4 holes, which looks as though a tool sticks into the holes?
Thanks a lot for your help.

It's hard to see from the pic, but that bottom tool has a couple of pins in it.
-
• #61
bottom tool shown has the pins that fit those holes they are on the right hand end .That is the adjustable cup
-
• #62
Oh thats great, cheers.
Any specific names for these types of tools? Also, you think this was worth £15?
-
• #64
Thanks a lot for the help, really.
Just before I order it today...
One last little issue, is that the "pin holes" really are only 0.5 cm ish wide, just looks like the pins are to large. -
• #65
2.9mm pin spanner?
-
• #67
Yeah 2.9 sounds right!!
Is that generally what they all arE? -
• #68
Im far from an expert but I have found that tool indispensable since I purchased it
-
• #69
That tool showed doesn't show it to well but the pin is the right size they are replacable usually and have a bit of meat on them as they unscrew they are thinner on the ends to fit those holes(badly explained)

Coupla notes:
The fixed cup get screwed all the way in, on the drive side.
The adjustable cup goes in the non-drive side as far as it needs to so that the bearing run nice but there's no lateral movement. Lock ring then whacked on good and tight.
Counter intuitively the axle goes in in such a way that the end with the longer flats goes in the non drive side if that makes sense? It's not symmetrical, in your picture the side with the longer flats are on the right hand side.
Hope that's some help to someone.

Mine hasn't turned up in the post and was hoping to get it done tonight/this weekend. Does anyone have one I can buy/borrow please?

I need a good campag bb removal tool for this type of bb
The tool I have is butter soft alloy and is quickly giving up the ghost.
I haven't got mega bucks to buy a pro set up but just something more solid and ideally made of steel.
Maybe one of these: - Park BBT4?
-

The park BBT4 is the best of a bad bunch - the BB design is poor in my opinion so you always struggle to get these out, regardless of the tool. I've tried pretty much all of the tools that were available and the Park one probably shades it.
I got so fed up with them that I've given up on them and use the Centaur or Chorus BBs instead.
The fag is great when installing... but tying to get a ridden fag bb out using it can be a nightmare... once you have slipped a few times then you have no chance.
the tacx works like a dream. tightens onto the bb, no slippage. works great with the plastic fag cups, as found on bromptons... if you are that way inclined.
not that i will judge you and your brompton in anyway.
