Track Pumps

Maplin had some track pumps in recently for a fiver.

Got one in TK Maxx for £2. No idea what pressure it'll do, but I managed to get up to around 80psi without any problem. It's really tacky and plasticy with one of those lever things for the valve. Came with converters for use with footballs too.

I did manage to pop an inner tube with it (I guess it was pinched) at about 2am one night. Made our parakeet freak out - those things are loud when they go.

Incidentally, if you have the carrying capacity on your bike/luggage, the Topeak Road Morph G is a reasonable investment if you go out for longer distance rides. Saves a lot of trawling if you throw a puncture a long way from home.

Otherwise, I use a BETO. Cheap, crap, shoddy design, flimsy parts etc. Never let me down yet.

Booooo to CO2 cartridges. Such a waste of materials and energy!

I had a weird thing happen to me yesterday; just when I had to rush out to do an errand that had a time limit, I had my SKS TK1/Rennkompressor fail on me. Actually, the weird thing was that I had actually tried to use my Specialized WindPipe first, but that was leaking air, and when I went to use my SKS, the hose had split. I suppose its not too strange that after 3 years regular use that a part might fail. So 2 pumps that had never ever failed before, failed in unison. I found it bizarrely funny actually. Anyway, upshot was that I needed replacement pumps, and settled for the Topeak Joe Blow Sport II, which I got from Evans, via their price matching deal....it was £24.99 at Comptons Cycles and also at Halfords.

What I discovered afterwards, was that I would need a replacement hose for my TK1 (that was the name of the model before it changed name to the Renkompressor). Cyclebasket do all the Renkompressor spares, including the hose. Their delivery prices are notoriously expensive at £6.oo per order, so I always buy quite a few things from them at once, then its very cheap. I have noticed that the new version of the Renkompressor from SKS, has a different nozzle; plastic, not metal like before. But since my hose split just below where the hose joins the nozzle, it may be a design change based not only on cost-cutting, but on feedback from failures exactly like mine. I know Dammit has a Renkompressor, so at least one person on here might benefit from this post.

Topeak Joe Blow Sport II

Works well for me, although I can't help thinking that it doesn't put much air in with each stroke/plunge.

I bought a bikemate from aldi for a fiver and blew the foot off after a 3 weeks replaced it with a raleigh branded one from ebay with a tempramental pressure guage-when it dies ill get a good one

for the money the Topeak joe blow sport is awesome. Its a no brainer.

The Revolution one I picked up in the sale 4 years ago for is still going well. It's the house bike pump so 3 cyclists using it regularly, including a 120psi road warrior. Currently going for £9.99 in the sale:

Just don't every buy the own brand tubes they do, they are utter crud.

What a bargain,.....because thats a Joe Blow Sport II in everything but name. Its either a good copy, or its from the same factory.

Does anyone know what little attachments a Joe Blow comes with?
ie:football pin and stuff..

Mine came with a football pin and a cone-shaped thing, presumably for blowing up airbeds and the like

The valve on my Silca has finally gone and I'm not sure the guage is accurate any longer.

Are there any sub £30 bargain pumps about currently?

Never seen it up close, as I haven't ordered it, but the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op is an excellent shop, as I have bought from them, and if a forumenger has used the item for 4 years without troubles, then I'd call that a pretty good choice. But, Joe Blow's are available in many shops for around £25, so either way, you're a winner.

you can check the guage on your pump by comparing it with another pump, if the guate is correct then you could possibly look to just replacing the pump head - either one of the Hirame clones or a Joe Blow Multi head - i have the multi head on my pump and it is great because it takes schraeder or presta on the same hole.

The valve on the Silca Superpista is in the base (under the gauge). It's replaceable and I'm trying to find the part in the UK, and still may do. SJS sell gauges, but don't list the valve.

It doesn't make for the most exciting Saturday evening.

For Silca valves (and other bits) Peligap in Bristol have hold the parts in stock. They have a list of retailers on their sit but it's not comprehensive so I can actually order though my LBS (although it's not on their list).

Just putting this online for anyone else who'se keeping a Silca pump alive and needs parts.

I was planning on getting a Slica to replace my Joe Blow* on the basis that all the parts were replaceable and it's meant to be a last-a-lifetime-type tool....

...and also all the funky colours.

*and then hand-me-down the JB to my dad - it's still going strong after +3years

Go for the longer body Superpista, only another couple of quid and inflate that little bit quicker. They're shop/track spec so yes, should last forever.

The rubber washers (in the head) do need replacing avery couple of years if you use threaded valve innertubes.
