I tried Peckham Lidl but they were a track pump free zone. So got a Bontrager Charger from Evans, £19.99, metal barrel, double head, gauge at the top of the pump for easy reading. My tyres say max pressure is 90psi so took them up to that. Do you guys go over the recommended max or just have tougher tyres?

I read the blurb either from supplier (usually Parker for me) or manufacturer's web site. IMO tubes make a difference too, Recommend Vredestein butyl @ £2.50. !00=110psi normal road use to absorb rotten London roads 120psi Richmond Park, 130-140 cat racing.

My Dillos on my Bowery are 120psi, but the shop said they put about 130psi in them. Like riding circles of stone, but no flats. I think its okay to over pump by a few pounds, as that comes back out when you release the pump. Anybody agree?

Got one of these of my old flatmate for 15 quid when he 'gave up cycling in London'
Super sweet pump, I will ring him and see if he has any more

I did some looking around, and I'm going to try 2 get 2 pumps from Tesco
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-5179.aspx (like MisterK did).I did find though that it pays to shop around, because what I thought was a cheapish pump from Argos, is actually more than twice the price of an internet shop.

Amazing difference in prices. Sorry VanUden, that I didn't post this before your buy.

Are these actually going to get any pressure in your tires though? I'd worry they'd brake near 100psi

Evans were doing clearances on track pumps,
paid £12 for mine i think. Instead of posting [additional £5 or so] get it delivered to your nearest store for free :D
that's what i did.

Motoko was right. I bought 2 Vento track pumps from Argos, and promptly returned them within 24 hrs. I have found out the reason also that some cheap pumps don't have the psi rating in their adverts, and its because they can't guarantee anything. Neither pump acheived more than 80lbs psi. And neither gave accurate readings either. So, I've bought the best of the best, a SKS TP11. Though I was very very surprised when I found that some assembly was still required. I spoke to the shop, Cycle Surgery, and they said they would sort it.

Since I'm sorted at home with my SKS track pump, I wanted to carry something that would get me going on the road (higher pressures, but smaller than a track pump). I had a normal mini-pump, but didn't like it, as it made my arm ache from the in-out pumping action. I'm now considering 2 pumps, that either would fit in my Timbuk2.

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=12635&src=froogle (No pumping involved, but slow, and doesn't reach 130psi) -

The Topeak one is good, I've got one. Get the one without the pressure gauge, then there is less to go wrong.

DOn't buy SKS ones. They break The handle and rod came out on the upstroke. You can disassemble the pump and put the rod back in, but since it was only pushed into a tight plastic hole, there's no way of making it stay where it is - other than refraining from pulling the handle upwards.

Why would anyone use a track pump if they're not riding on the track?

another vote for joe blow
i wouldn't use anything else now

Whatever track pump you get, throw away those useless lever fittings and get a round brass push on one as fitted to Silcas, they do not strain the valve and push on and pull off perfectly everytime in .03 of a second, less is more.

I picked up a decathlon track pump few years back. still going strong...

This is a bit of useless info to anybody but a NOOB.
When using an SKS track pump, a slow rhythm must be employed, otherwise a false pressure reading can be given. Steady rhythm is the key.
I noticed that some pumps can be used with a more rapid motion, and the pressure increases directly, but with the SKS (that I have), it doesn't respond well to rapidity. Yes, its well bolted together, tight, and no air escapes in normal use.

which is preferred, joe blow or the SKS?

Silca
Just realised how much of tight git I am. Track pump from Tesco's. A pair of cycling shoes from Lidl and various clothes and heart rate monitor from Aldi... Hang my head in shame...
