I'm off home to hang my 'three lions' footie towel on the balcony railings. I've actually got a flag somewhere, should really raise it on our cheapo wall mounted flag pole.
Its easier to be patriotic about England, post emigration ;)

I'm having a whale of a time here today - for the past few years, the BNP here have held their own St George's Day celebrations, which invariably involved Richard Barnbrook donning a suit of armour, riding a white horse through Barking, to "slay" a papier mache "dragon" in Barking Park.
This year, the Council, in all its wisdom, has decided to run a St George's Day event in every ward in the borough to try and hijack it from the BNP, apparently oblivious to the fact that the BNP are instead claiming to have sewn the seeds of patriotism in Barking and Dagenham and that if they're elected as majorioty party at the next election, they'll make these celebrations bigger and better (and probably even more racist).
Every car seems to have one of those stupid England flags flying, while there are even more flags draped out of windows and babies covered in St George's Cross blankets than I've seen before.
I don't have anything against St George's Day per se, but when it's being done in such a ham-fisted way in a borough where the racial tensions are especially high, I don't think it's such a good idea for the Council to be lending validity to what's essentially (in this Borough) a BNP construct.
It is unfortunate but its life and something that needs to be dealt with separately and not just upon punishment of St Georges day, i dont know anybody english or otherwise who thinks english people shouldnt celebrate St Georges.
Even the Arch Bishop of Canterbury was on radio 2 earlier telling us all to celebrate it and he was rallying england to have a national holiday, the floodgate is opening for us to celebrate england and all the hypersensitivty around it 'for fear of upsetting' is nonsense according to our first black bishop of england!!!!
Lets hate the BNP and not the occasion they are celebrating eh?

we got nothing to be proud about any more, a nation on the down turn should be allowed to celebrate it's make believe founder.
if we were a super power it would be seen as gloating, if we were a nation of bog trotting spud munchin fantical religous alcoholics the world would join in with us... but we are in the middle.
I am proud to be English but don't feel the need for a special day to get rinsed by the shops to celebrate it. that and i hate those flags!!! -

I can understand and appreciate that - which is why I'm clear in saying I don't have a problem with it per se. It's more the fact that in a borough like this one, they have to be very sensitive about the messages - implied or otherwise - that they're sending out by having these 'celebrations'.

i think one of the best quotes has to come from an Oi! record, just can't remember which band it is........
"When you think of where you came from it must fill your hert with pride....praise the lord you was made in england......." -

Nationalism didn't exist until about 1900.

I am proud to be English but don't feel the need for a special day to get rinsed by the shops to celebrate it. that and i hate those flags!!!i disagree. we as a country are not integrating immigrants properly, due in part to our lack of strong culture. i envy the americans, even first generation immigrants call themselves american, and are proud to be american. here, it takes 2-3 generations for that to happen, and even then you won't get many going round saying they're 'proud to be english'.
i feel the lack of proper national identity over here is a big problem which should be addressed. it probably stems from WW2, the idea that nationalism is bad and only leads to bad things. so what happens is, we get hundreds of different communities which evolve all over the country, who keep to themselves and don't integrate because they don't feel there is anything to integrate with.
a national day of celebration, even if it doesn't relate to st. george, is something we as a country should be proud to partake in. every other country in the world manages it, why can't we?
oh, and we do have something to be proud of as a country : music!

I'm glad I was born in England, and there are some extremely good things in the world that have come out of England (like anywhere).
But I was born here through pure chance, just 1 of 60 billion who could've been born anywhere on the planet, so pride to me seems very irrelevant.
I'm not proud to be English. But I'm very lucky and glad to be English - and St. Georges Day is a good way to celebrate that. Even though I'm too busy to do anything today... -
