With a big chunk from lottery ticket sales though, which is an easier choice to spend on than schools and hospitals which should be funded by the state and not on someone's idle speculation that a £1 flutter could make them a squillionaire.

They've kinda missed the point of the funding though. The athletes don't just train for the olympics. You have the World Championships every year (which matters more imo) and all the other large events, for example the TdF.
