Subtle changes, bugs and feedback

  • We have two URLs for a comment.

The comment within it's reply chain: https://www.lfgss.com/comments/11886727/

The comment within the context of the wider conversation: https://www.lfgss.com/comments/11886727/incontext/ which will redirect to the right page: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/131364/?offset=5250#11886727

We currently use the latter as early feedback was not positive at all for the former... but the former was the original design. It's reached from the # numbered link on the right of a post... the permalink for a comment with additional context of what it was in reply to - a single parent - and all immediate replies.

  • Also, a tooltip (I think that's what they're called) that pops up with the quoted post when you hover over "in reply to" would be nice.

Quite frankly, what we need is something like this to help us through the maze that is LFGSS:

As experienced computer users will recall, this was always one of the most popular features of Microsoft Office. :)

David, I don't get 'Reply' buttons on that sort of page--is that deliberate? If I remember correctly, there was a 'Reply' box at the bottom, although I think you couldn't use that to reply to specific posts in the 'post chain'. (I quite like opening up posts I want to reply to in separate tabs to park them until I've decided what to reply to, and it's handy to have the reply function right there. Instead of just the one 'Reply' box, it would be good to have 'Reply' in each of the posts. NB not terribly important, but it saves clicking back to the main thread and then clicking 'Reply'.

  • I quite like it. But if people disagree, they disagree, but I clearly agree with your original design plan. Perhaps an option which allows users to make that choice in settings some how?

  • It is deliberate.

You're no longer viewing a whole conversation, you are viewing a single comment (which has the reply box below it).

We do show you what the single comment was in reply to, or whether it has replies... but that page is all about a single comment and not the whole conversation.

  • There isn't a 'Reply' box, though. I remember that it used to be there, but it's disappeared (latest Firefox, Windows XP). All there is is an 'Edit' link.

  • Is it your own post?

You can't reply to your own post... it's like talking to yourself, it's a bit "special".

There should be a reply box if you view someone else's post.

  • No, it's all posts, irrespective of who posted them.

  • Is it still that way if you disable all extensions, CTRL+F5 the page, and so on? Or use a different browser such as Chrome?

Have you tried running an operating system released in the last 12 years? I've no idea whether that makes a difference or not, I'm not sure whether it impacts on Firefox at all.

  • When I click on 'View ignored' on my page it says 'not found'.

  • Have you tried running an operating system released in the last 12 years?

    Ha!

  • @Velocio @Oliver Schick

I am not sure what is supposed to happen but I do not get a reply in that either. MacOS Mavericks, Chrome Canary, private browsing (no extensions)

    This link, does it work?

I've tried all that except for using a different browser.

Probably doesn't, and yes, I run xUbuntu on two other computers, but they're not networked. The problem only arises in Windows XP, which many other people still use (and which, while I realise that it's getting a bit long in the tooth, works perfectly well still for my limited purposes).

  • @Velocio @Oliver Schick now with right screenshot attachment:

  • Glad it's not just me. :)

  • Nope.

I've been getting the same over the last couple of days when ignoring conversations, rather than being taken to the Ignored Items page.

  • By contrast, the 'ignored' page works for me (and always has done).

  • I run xUbuntu on two other computers, but they're not networked.

But. Why? Non-networked computers. I can't even imagine such a thing anymore. It's like a computer without a mouse. But worse.

  • Which leads me to: Shouldn't you be able to reply to yourself to stay in the conversation with a second post? I mean that conversation view is kindof hidden but if we were to use it more it makes it a little weird especially for me types who forget to put stuff into the first message.

  • One is a freecycled laptop courtesy of TW on which I write minutes of meetings, which doesn't need to be networked, and one is the computer on which I write, which is not networked to avoid distraction. Non-networked is good sometimes.

  • But how do you get those minutes or writings to other people?

Although, I agree not being networked is good at times - it took me a long time to not have this place act as a distraction (although going offline has never been an option - research requires the internet).

    Ah... interesting.

So the page might be working, but some item on the page may no longer be visible and thus the whole page is returning a not found.

i.e. if you ignore something that is then deleted... or a person then banned.

That sounds like a plausible way of getting to that error. I'll check it out.
