Subtle changes, bugs and feedback

  • It was a terrible joke, I shouldn't have.

But all I was doing was copying a HR and an image into each comment. We haven't actually written any support for signatures, I'm not that crazy.

  • :'-(

I'll just put this back where I found it then.

  • But signatures are a function of any modern forum! LFGSS has languished for FAR too long without beautiful animated images, boast-lists of bikes owned, and cryptically passive-aggressive lines of text!

Ideally, the average signature should be three times the size of the average post content.

  • Just stick it on the end of your posts anyway. Keep the code on your clipboard and you can enjoy a personal signature with no forum implementation!

  • So who gonna put a signature on their post indefintely for the next few months?

  • Why, BareNecessities, of course. :)

  • Unfollowing threads.

I can't unfollow this thread: is it because it's been closed?

Same with this old thread of mine, which I'm also unable to close: is it because it was created pre-Microcosm?

    edit
    And this one.

  • Member Last Active date.

This profile shows the member was last active in Jan 2012, but their last comment was in July of this year...

  • Which is it? Close or unfollow?

All three appear to be closed, and if they're closed they'll receive no updates.

  • Import quirk... we merely imported the "last active" from vBulletin, but I suspect that anyone who was "invisible" on vBulletin didn't have a good value in that column.

Anyone who signs in or does anything now, will have that value updated accordingly.

  • I just want to unfollow all three threads, but nothing happens when I click on "unfollow". I guessed that it's because they're either closed and/or were imported from vBulletin.

With my threads, I'm unable to re-open them (which I guessed would allow me to unfollow) as the dropdown menu is blank.

Are you saying "they're closed and won't get further replies, so it doesn't matter if you're following them or not"? Fair enough.

I've been getting to grips with the search function and discovered how much I was following that I no longer needed to and have been tidying-up.

  • Interesting.

There is a bug there, that the select list is empty (or appears at all).

You should still be able to unfollow though, even if the item is closed. I shall verify that shortly.

  • Thanks, but I meant to add that it's not important (to me): I read you have more pressing concerns...

  • This is merely cosmetic, but when quoted, it's harder to see the bold in the quote text.

    I don't know whether I'm the only one who find it a little tricky seeing the difference;

  • @Velocio I think I found a bug (I've closed, and empty cache on Chrome), the quote symbol end up going on the last letter instead of the first letter, as illustrated;

the quote symbol end up going on the last letter instead of the first letter

It does that in Opera too. I hope both problem will be fixed when we get proper quoting, like we've had on email, usenet and web fora for about 30 years.

Erm... how do you think it works in email and usenet?

  • I don't want the old way of quoting back because now everyone has stopped quoting awful, awful people wholesale. Now that the ignore function is complete this means that I don't ever need to look at their wretched posts ever again. It's beautiful.

  • Erm... how do you think it works in email and usenet?

Quoted text contains partial headers sufficient to identify and attribute the original post. Obviously the way web fora implemented it was better, with direct links to the quoted posts, but that's why hypertext is a good thing, and dumb markdown is a relic of the 1970s which should never have been considered for a new product.

  • So much this.

Now that people have to make an effort to quote something, rather than just hitting one button, I no longer have to scroll through the same three three paragraphs of text and half a dozen photos, just to read "this is rad".

What it doesn't do well though is make the whole conversation easy to follow; what's revealed by clicking the post number isn't a complete chain.

That could be helpful. A special "chain" page when you click "in reply to". Also, a tooltip (I think that's what they're called) that pops up with the quoted post when you hover over "in reply to" would be nice.

I feel that as it is now is a bit awkward, and harder to engage with.
