  • two things, and I don't know if this is the right place or if they've been discussed before:

on my work computer in internet explorer only, when I press return on the search box top right, it refreshes the page but does not search. When i use firefox the same thing doesn't happen.

have you come across this http://skimlinks.com/skimlinks ? presumably yes, maybe you're already doing it, I don't know - could it be a good way to make money from the forum?

Sorry, don't know v much tech stuff about either...

  • I hate SkimLinks.

    They LIE!

    Seriously, they really do.

    Them and viglinks.

They both claim that if you insert "just this very small bit of JavaScript, barely a few hundred bytes" that it will magically convert every link and give money without users noticing.

    Except:
The few hundred bytes of JavaScript downloads over 35KB of other JavaScript files.
And the JavaScript is slloooooowww. Which affects user responsiveness and actually reduces traffic to the site as people leave for faster sites.
And the money they give you, well it's less 25%... 25%!!!!

But mostly I care that SkimLinks and VigLinks and the use of any JavaScript to achieve this heavily impacts the user experience.

To which they've said: "But many sites use this stuff".

    Yes.

Sites that load in only 4 seconds, and already have fuck loads of adverts and tracking from everyone and sites that make Ghostery almost flip out as it approaches 20 items in the alert bubble.

    Skimlinks sucks.

    Big time.

    And so does viglinks.

And both can suck me long before I actually consider putting them on the site.

    And relax.

    Yeah, I considered them.

  • And I'll look into the IE thing, I'll need to find a Windows box again, I keep destroying them.

  • not loving the inpost advertising for specific words. I know its your forum and you can do what you want with it but it does suck a bit...

Getting these on and off too, orange underlined links. Just done a scan and couldn't find anything, and not got any extensions except for adblock and https everywhere

  • haha! Thanks VB for the thorough and educational response.

I am not techy (although I am interested generally in how things work) and I came across it in a client meeting today and thought it sounded like it could be useful. I think as an idea it might be, but clearly it is too hard to make work without affecting usability.

I would just use firefox but for some reason while work allow me to have it on my machine, they won't allow me to download the addons required to make it watch videos, which is more annoying than the search box not working, so I stick to IE!

Definitely a problem at your end.

I do not use any third party advertising on LFGSS at all.

If you cannot find and remove it, then I strongly suggest accessing LFGSS over https.

Though I far more strongly suggest rebuilding your machine.

  • My money is on it being a toolbar install.

  • Branwen, while you're infected... do you know how to use the Chrome Developer Tools (F12) to view the network for a page load?

If so... could you take a look at an affected page and give me links to any files that are include that:
    1) Did not come from lfgss.com
    2) Are not images

I might be able to help figure out the source, but could also include something on my page to break whatever JavaScript that they're using.

So, looking at network I'm getting:

    Request URL:http://a.easyinline.com/imp?p=YTM2NjMyMTg2NjhyK20cvWkZdLqe9aO3kb6%2Bn8nlpNjlME80BlJftNjgCPNqWbqn9zmQvPl%2BuwAP6Kd%2BkwPmI2C0Ab%2BolVZ84Uex%2Few62FiZ9WDXw8kUy5JAYrH4zRDsqdKDQ6EF02HQO2SOAmyLyq7C1yofQ23P4y4w0%2BPcz%2FxvEyIrYro6Cb2aCb8wBfJmVn8

does that help? It's still only happening very occasionally, and as far as I can tell only on here (I don't browse much on this machine so will have to see if I see it anywhere else)
Seem's like it's meant to be an add-on, except I've not got any add-on's beyond HTTPS eveywhere, so no idea where it's coming form.

Also, on a side note, the HTTPS home page seems to be missing all the welcome info, as opposed to the normal page ("welcome to our community, please register etc etc.")
    I logged in. Doh!

  • When I quote someone else there is this message underneath my reply box, "

You have selected 2 posts that are not part of this thread. [Quote these posts as well](http://www.lfgss.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=3059003&stripquote=1#), or [deselect these posts](http://www.lfgss.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=3059003&stripquote=1#)." If I hit the "quote these posts" no additional posts are actually included.

  • Click deselect, or clear your cookies.

You used multi-quote at some point.

You may have multi-quoted the troll the other day, and as he has been nuked with his posts it can't actually find the posts when you click reply.

So easyinline is a thing which injects adverts on to all web pages that you view that are not over https

Removal instructions are on this page:
    http://easyinline.com/support

How do I uninstall Yontoo and completely get rid of EasyInline and all Yontoo apps and ads?

If there's a single piece of functionality you no longer want, but still want to use others, consider disabling the specific Yontoo App individually from the Yontoo App Market.

Uninstall from Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome (PC): Go to the Windows Start Menu and then to Control Panel > Add/Remove ("Programs & Features" in Vista/Windows 7) and click "Remove" next to 'Yontoo'.

Uninstall from Firefox or Google Chrome (Mac): In the top menu, go to Tools > Add-ons. Select the Yontoo logo and then click Uninstall. Note: You cannot uninstall from PC with these steps, see instructions above for PC.

It was probably added with something called Yontoo App Market, or rather, you probably added an app from that marketplace and the marketplace forced installed the software that injects adverts:
    http://www.yontoo.com/TermsOfService.aspx

The Software is free to use and supported by advertising. Enabling Software features may cause additional ads to appear when browsing certain websites. These may include search, banner, inline text or transitional ads, depending on which features are enabled and websites are visited. These ads are not associated with or endorsed by underlying websites.

My bold in there... they are nothing to do with me.

The Yontoo stuff might have been installed when you installed other software like uTorrent, which bundles ad supported software and you simply may not have been diligent about opting out of it during install.

Anyhow, that's the root cause, and you need to uninstall via your Control Panel and Add/Remove Software (or whatever that is called).

You should also check for an extension called "Yontoo Layers" and remove that if it's present.

  • Additionally the extension might be called "Drop Down Deals".

    It's classified as malware:
    http://www.systemlookup.com/CLSID/56875-YontooIEClient_dll.html

And you should be able to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to nuke it.
    http://www.safer-networking.org/personal/

The way this Yontoo stuff works is to basically act as a proxy to the internet and to parse pages and to inject code into the pages.

    I hate it.

  • Is it expected behaviour that putting [ code] [/ code] tags around text does not escape BBcode? Eg this
    [ code][ img]http://i.imgur.com/hdfFB.jpg[/img][/code]
without the spaces in the tags looks like
    [code][/code]
whereas I would have expected (and clearly so does the code box sizecalculator)
    [code][ img]http://i.imgur.com/hdfFB.jpg[/img][/code]
(without the space in the img tag)

    Cheers

  • Is it expected behaviour that putting [ code] [/ code] tags around text does not escape BBcode?

It is now that you've pointed it out.

BBcode parsing is core vBulletin functionality, I can't make any promises that they have done their job well but as I have seen that bit of code I'm going to leave it in whatever state it currently is. It works well enough, and I daren't touch it because it is weird.

  • Ha! Fair enough, anyone wanting to quote such stuff should be competent enough to work around it..

  • I know you've done lots of tinkering and I understand none of it, but I'm seeing a few images so large they almost certainly wouldn't have embedded pre-tinkering. Is the site now able to display huge images?

  • Yeah, I'll nuke that very shortly.

It's too much for mobile clients.

  • I'm getting a database error page when I try and view user control panel. On a primitive phone browser, but it usually works.

  • I have just rebooted all servers for the first time in 3 years.

You may have been accessing whilst one of them was still coming up... could you let me know if it's still happening.

  • Nope it's fine now. Cool.

  • clownflare removed, amen

  • The rep/comment dialog disappears when I try to focus on the input.
