  • Everything looks great, David... Massive improvement...
    thumbs up

  • ^ This.

  • Yep looks great.

I don't even have to zoom on my phone (HTC Desire), very impressed.

  • i tried using the search function to find a thread that contains info on issues with the search function not working
    but it didn't work
only when i click search with the mouse rather than hitting return does it work

  • Used the site using Opera on the Wii and it works quite well.

  • New design looks good, and is much clearer on my phone, however when i try and view the site using Opera on Windows 7 i get this:

same response on different IP (neighbour's wifi)
works fine with Internet Explorer from the same computer.

Has something changed on lfgss, or have i broken my own computer somehow?

Have tried this, Opera 11 on Windows 7, and it works fine.

Could do me a favour... using Opera, visit this site: http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

Then paste here whatever it says your user agent is.

I did change a bit of LFGSS to block clients which don't do nice things. It may be that you have a virus that is doing bad things, OR that I screwed up the definitions of the bad clients.

Let's assume it's me... and if you let me know what your user agent is I'll go have a look to see why it got caught out.

    Here you go boss:

    Your User Agent: Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.1; U; IBM EVV/3.0/EAK01AG9/LE; en) Presto/2.10.229 Version/11.61

Hope this helps, i might run a virus scan anyway though at my end.

  • thank you, thank you, thank you for giving us tags back dear leader. Please dont take them away again. They are the lifeblood of our (polo) community

  • VB

I was rolling my mouse over the main menu at the top. I noticed the words "posts" "forums" etc. don't have hyperlinks. Their drop downs do but not the words themselves.

If simplification and minimalism are good aims in the design of the interface - why not delete the first item of each menu* and link to the item removed through the headline word instead. For example; the word 'people' would link to the member list and the word 'classifieds' would link to 'display all'.

    • I know this won't work for every item but it's just an idea
  • That would leave touchscreen users probably unable to access anything but the first item in the menu.

  • Oh, can't touch screen people hover or roll over (in a UI sense, not literally) I suppose not.

  • Hello tags.

  • The old tags are looking really tired now though aren't they?

  • Really bad. Like toilet door scribbles but less amusing.

  • It was at my end.

The part that matched was "IBM EVV", which has been documented as being part of a bot used for attacks in the past.

The problem is that IBM EVV is actually perfectly innocent, it's just that the bot in the attacks was lying about what it was, saying it was something else.

When I looked through my logs I couldn't find a good browser claiming to be that... so I blocked it.

But actually, I just didn't look at enough of my logs. Opera is less than 1% of usage, so if I'd looked at several days worth of logs I would've seen it.

My bad, you should be good now.

  • is it possible to 'archive' the old tags and start anew?

  • is it possible to 'archive' the old tags and start anew?

    Yes.

  • Though it wouldn't change much.

How people use them is already set in stone.

  • New forum new start?

  • The tags were bought back because a lot of people missed them. The tags in some threads encapsulated the history of those threads and weren't used for bile and hate as they have been elsewhere (Football thread).

Just because there is a problem with some of the tags, does not infer there is a problem with all of the tags.

If I were willing to permanently nuke the contents of the tags as they are today and lose that history, then I would just disable them for good instead of resetting them.

Their utility as a search tool has long been lost, and unfortunately the predominant use today adds little value to the forum and only reflects badly on the people on here.

What I will do today is simply hide them from unregistered users. So that only people using the forum see them. At least that will limit the impact that the negative ones have on the lurkers at large.

I spotted the tags back this morning in 'photo of the day'. Looks like nothing's changed....

Or have I misunderstood and these are just the old tags back again?

  • velocio, I think you need to reapply the logic of the forum to the football thread, it maybe full of bile and hate, but it's football thread bile and hate, and those that post within it, to a certain extent understand the parameters of it. There is bile and hate throughout the forum, and personally I take umbrage at the football thread being singled out. We are just as much a forum community as polo, or the compass beers, and we have our own injokes and name calling, and putdowns.

The fact that tags have been used in a namecalling way has nothing to with it, and is more to do with the way tags have always been used, in a childlike and scattergun manner. Why should it be any different, or treated any differently, or made the posterchild for all that is wrong with tags, when tags and they way they were co-opted and used was around before it existed..

You do the football thread a disservice, by constantly making it appear to be the epicentre of all that is perceived to be wrong with social tag interaction here.

  • In fact, I've just done that.

If you aren't logged in... the tags are not displayed to you.

You can still search, but you won't see the tags.

This is still useful as the only tags in the cloud on the Advanced Search page are the ones used over and over, the common tags... which aren't the hateful ones.

But it hides the more foul ones which tend to be one-offs.

  • Currently browsing on my mobile device - I prefer to use v3 on here as I find it easier to navigate on the small screen, but the site is currently switching between it and v2 on random page loads. Is there some fiddling going on or does my phone just want to get in on the sexy new v2 action?
