Subtle changes, bugs and feedback

  • I said that, because if is true that time is money, loosing centiseconds at every scroll multiplied for every surfing, then for the entire life of every surfer, then for the total of the surfers, in the end will be more than just a decent amount of saving, globally speaking.

Plus, maybe, also an incentive to the racing.

  • You want a new one?

Or you can't see the old one?

Anyone who is able to produce a .ico file that works can provide one to me and I'll use it.

Oh, it disappeared from firefox at work but it's all present and correct here at home on chrome & firefox. My fault probably.

  • What I actually mean is, I think there needs to be some division between the threads, it's not as easy to navigate as before IMO.

    this

  • The search tool doesn't work when on the 'live updates' page. It's fine on homepage and subscribed threads. Not tried it on any other pages.

Also the font in the reply box has grown huge compared to the thread font size.

    Win 7 / Firefox

Did you miss this earlier in the thread David?

  • I ignored it.

The spy page needs a total overhaul. It breaks the search, and used to break the navigation, because amongst other things it overwrites the onload events for the page and breaks jQuery.

That's pretty good going. Takes a lot to be such a crap page.

So I'm ignoring it until such a time that I overhaul it.

  • What powers the spy page? Is it spybot? He has muttered things abut being broken before, notably after Dunwich...

Changes look good. I think I have a bug though - when I have a thread on ignore if the last post is in this thread the thread shows up on the homepage.

I assume this shouldn't happen as I have the thread on ignore and therefore don't want to see it?

  • crap page.

    wash your mouth out

  • Now you've settled upon a style for the unread/read posts, can you get rid of the icons and save yourself some bandwidth?
Does anyone actually recognise what they mean and use them to navigate?

  • ^ I do.

  • I do not

  • Its a lot easier to read now, thanks David.

or am i used to it....

  • Is there any obivious reason i can't search for threads? Any request just leads me back to home page.

  • Not seen any mention of this one.....I'm getting "Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing." whenever I try to search threads... Could well be to do with my company's security, but it was fine before the upheavals...!
(tried to utfs for an answer, but......!)

  • Search should be working. I've tested it here and it is.

You might need to force refresh your browser by CTRL+F5 or Apple+R or whatever works for your browser.

  • Tried it on http:// and takes me to the home page rather than search results -

  • Yeah, I'm on http://

What's your browser and OS? And, have you already cleared your cache and force refreshed?

  • I'm on Xp SP3/IE8 - sadly forced to used IE and no option to add another browser..... Cleared cache + ctl f5 - I'm still getting the error message coming from "new posts" or "todays posts", but get the homepage from the homepage (if that makes sense!)

...(btw...overall, its looking much cleaner, all browsers Ive got on my android tablet look good and work well too...)

  • I've got IE8 on Windows Server 2008. I'll give it a try on that.

  • Changes look good. I think I have a bug though - when I have a thread on ignore if the last post is in this thread the thread shows up on the homepage.

I assume this shouldn't happen as I have the thread on ignore and therefore don't want to see it?

It's always done that. I've found it's a very clever way of luring you back to see what gems have been posted in a thread you are trying to forget ever existed.

  • Exactly.

  • Another thing: when I click the 1st, 2nd and 4th A, the underlining for everything comes back and stays like that until I either refresh or click the 3rd A. Weird.

  • CTRL+F5 on the other sizes. You've played with it already and have the style cached.

  • So... what's the consensus after a couple of days with the new header, navigation and home page and thread list designs?

    For me:

    Pros:

I love the larger fonts on the thread views, especially as every time I use mobile it's readable.
I love the new navigation, because it works even before the page is fully loaded.
I like the thread listing, and the fact that the layout is now horizontal. Find it easier to scan.
I like the clarity of the home page... what is read and not.
I love the speed of the site overall, how snappy it is.
I'm glad the underlines on links have gone, even though it's slightly less obvious what are links in the posts themselves.

    Cons:

I still, out of habit probably, find the home page glaring now it's white.
Actually I'm undecided on the home page... feels like it's missing something or that there needs to be some way of separating the forum listing from the page background.

Overall I think it's been a success, and all that's left is to turn the tags back on.

  • I really like the new look.

Only minor niggle is that (for me) with the page nav (« First < 34 42 43 44 45 46 >) it's quite tricky to see which page is actually selected. Have to let my eyes adjust until I can see the slightly different grey.

  • Good point. Also, for touch devices that could stand to be a lot bigger.
