And yeah, death to underlining.

I think the grey would work better to "highlight" unread posts.
-
• #2154
White is brighter than grey, therefore it's a better highlight.
-
• #2155
But when you're used to the site being white, it's not really a highlight. IMO of course.
-
• #2156
The highlight for unread is bolded text.
The hint at old items is a grey background.
-
• #2157
In that case, I don't really see the point in the grey as it acts as a highlight.

Now I need to change my font again ... all the letters seem a little spaced apart.
Never had to change my font so much before ... not that that is a problem, except when I need to do it to 4 computers that I access the forum from.

The context is not a white page background, the context is a list of items, some of which have grey backgrounds and some of which have white backgrounds. The grey is visually 'knocked back'. It's not a question of logically what constitutes a highlight, it's the perceived visual effect of a brighter, higher contrast area vs a dimmer, lower contrast area.

so long as the bold stays, I don't mind, I'll get used to the grey/white
-
• #2163
That's good.
Thinking of doing the home page now.
Specifically... thinking of removing those red and yellow boxes.
Because if the thread list is effective at displaying what has been read and is unread, then using that system on the home page removes the need for those images.
Which would reduce another 4 HTTP requests, and be more consistent with the thread page.

He's a hippy, he's always happy. He's just grumblin' because the age of free love passed him by.
Don't sweat. He'd have been paying for it, even back then.

^^ Thank the forum overlords.. those yellow / red boxes are fugly.
-
• #2166
I only started noticing the red and yellow boxes since the recent changes.
And now I do see them I find them really intrusive.+1 for losing them.

I can understand that, but when you take the grey in the context of the whole page, it highlights that area that's grey, IMO.
Losing battle. Don't want to argue about it.

I agree. It was confusing at first. Highlight shouldn't be the same style as the page background or the list background, should probably be a third colour - or the ol weight=bold. Nitpicking.

Not so sure about the new front page with the text in the last post column being so small and overlapping with the info about who posted and when; looks messy and unfinished.
-
• #2170
It is messy and unfinished.
But that will be the way it remains overnight as I've got to head out soon, and looking messy and unfinished is slightly better than broken and unfinished.

Did the forum changed again? must've been my eyes...
edit - notice Velocio replied already.

• #2172
The lack of lines makes me uneasy
-
• #2173
@ Velocio; Yeh, I think just putting the thread title in bold would be enough to make it look a bit clearer.

Like a lot of things in design, it's moot - you can't make a 100% case for it either way. It's also very hard to isolate, because there are so many factors, such as the user's display / resolution / screen brightness / browser fonts / what interfaces they're used to using / whether they're visually impaired / etc. etc.
So that was all very much IMHO. :)

Recent changes look really good, I don't know if anyone has noted this yet, or if it's intentionaly, but when you hit quote the box that you get to type in is a bit narrow - looks like about the centre 1/3 of the browser width (using Iron). In fact, the quick reply box is the same.
Bold & white background for unread, normal & grey for read. Definitely. Gmail is a very good example to follow.
