I've been meaning to ask--is the search word filter too restrictive?
It's occurred to me with a few threads that I can't find them because none of the words in the title are accepted by the search. An example is a thread I started recently called 'We're all in this together'. When I search for the whole title (including 'we're'), I get:
Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : all, in, this, together
sumo reminded me of this last night:
I know this is a merging thread, but could you take "everybody" off the filter for searching. It always takes me aged to find the "what is everybody up to" thread because all the words are filtered.
I don't really know how to address the problem, as I assume the list of excluded words is very long and would take ages to edit by hand, but I suspect that removing all really long words like 'everybody' and 'together' from it would be more easily possible?
In any event, it's good advice for thread-starting to include distinctive or unusual words, as that causes threads to be more easily remembered and used.

The stop word list is built into MySQL. It's part of the database product itself and the software needs to be re-compiled to make it do anything other than the binary releases... re-compiling isn't a good idea as it breaks updates and basically means that if a security flaw is found then I'd become responsible for packaging it rather than just using the binary packages provided by MySQL.
The full stop-word list can be found here:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/fulltext-stopwords.htmlThere's not a great deal that can be done about them though... except to use tagging as a workaround for anything that is too short to search meaningfully for, or for anything on the stop word list. The tagging works where the normal search doesn't as it's a separate and self-contained search index that has been hacked onto the forum, and it doesn't use MySQL to do the heavy lifting of performing a search (since tags are simplistic and don't require phrase based searches or the ability to handle minor mis-spellings).

Ah, thanks, David. I'm naturally surprised to discover that tagging is actually good for something other than shits and giggles. ;)

That Mark All Read button.
Please, pretty please, can we move it somewhere off the front page and into the CP?

Can we replace it by a Mark Almond button?

I have Bike Porn on ignore, however I just needed to search for something within the thread and the results page shows 'x of x pages', but displays no posts. Do I have to remove the thread from my ignore list in order to properly search?

Sounds sensible right?

This is the 2nd time in the past couple of days this has happened now - the original post of my for sale thread has disappeared: http://www.lfgss.com/thread63994.html

Probably too many photos, which triggers the anti-spam stuff, and you edit it? Which is like posting a new thread to the software, so it re-triggers the anti-spam stuff.
Rule of thumb: Spread photos out across many posts, and don't edit posts that have lots of photos, just reply instead.

Thanks Velocio, I'll remember that, cheers.

Just a quick question/suggestion and probably one more for the new forum when you build it. does the current forum provide the ability to see peoples location on a map? Im not talking about real time location more just the postcode of peoples addresses. it would help with knowing if there is anyone from here living near you so you can contact local people for meeting up. (especially handy if you dont live in london like me!) Obvs it would need to be an opt in rather than opt out

I'm pretty sure I'm losing subscriptions to threads without doing so myself - happened twice now.

why does photo upload always fail?
-
• #1447
For me, it doesn't always fail and usually works with 2-5 tries. It's annoying, obviously.

I've got emails to notify of PMs set as on in my options but I don't get emails. Is it just me or everyone?
